For reference check out pinoydvd.com. They have extensive reviews of Divx capable players available in the Philippines.
Surprisingly, these cheap looking Mpeg-4 capable players made from China have more range when it comes to the files it can play...
Try playing Xvid-encoded avi files on those Sony, Philips, etc...
They all fail!
I know since I've tested them when I went to check for a player which can play all my anime collection.
eepp sa sony ra ni fail ang Xvid, sa Philips ako na try ok kaayoalso lahi ra ang quality sa big screen tv ang cheap looking players, i've tried to compare this with our Matrix brand vs. LG one pero sa 21" pareho pareho ra quality, although flimsy kaayo ang tray holder sa Matrix compared to the branded ones, murag mabali kung iduot gamay

there's a tool which allows you to change the 4CC of an avi file from xvid to divx. this might solve the problem for players which only recognize divx files.
search lang for MPEG4Modifier
if your looking for a standalone dvd/divx player buy it at Makro if you are a little kugi, downtown buy a brand "HUG" its only 1950 sa downtown area. It plays DIVx and even can mix the subs/audio channels.
