you're also forgetting LG. Hitachi-LG currently leads the market with an average of 2 million DVD burners shipped per month, followed by NEC. read the reviews on CDfreaks as well as reviews made by forum members and you'll see what i mean.
i own an LG GSA-4163B and it burns better compared to my officemates' BenQ DW-1620 and NEC ND-2510A. my only regret is the drive's is lack of PI/PIE scanning.
last price i saw for the BenQ DW-1620 was P3,700 at PC Options in Gilmore. as for NEC, it has plans to outsource to Lite-On.

@ idlewild
have you tried quality scan on your media burned with LG? You must have basis on saying that your LG burns better compared to BENQ and NEC, there are a lot of factors to consider, including the type of media that you used.
So there is no such thing as the best, each drive has its own advantage and disadvantage, just weigh what you need. I am just quoting reviews at CD freaks as well.
By the way, the number of DVD burners shipped does not mean it is the best. FYI
peace bro..
of course i have, otherwise i won't be talking about it. for example, i burnt the same type of media in BenQ and in LG and scanned them both in the BenQ. the BenQ reported lower error rates for the disc burnt with the LG. i'll post some screenshots after i get them from my officemate.
i don't really want to argue with you as i agree that both NEC and BenQ are great drives. i would recommend them also anytime. but i also believe LG is on par with them and i'm stating this based on experience and some reviews i've read from CDFreaks.
and one more thing, IMHO, the number of DVD burners shipped has also got to do with demands for the drive.
peace to you too bro...
for quality scans, i posted some of the burns i had with the LG at this thread: https://www.istorya.net/forums/index.php?topic=37749.0
but there seems to be a problem with imageshack as the images i posted won't show up anymore![]()
my notebook use Toshiba-Hitachi DVDRW ok lng naman 8X burner.... my BenQ is still cooking media disk.... i'm using MCC media in both of my drives....
i have to disagree re LG being the better burner.
I have a 1640, 3520a, and before an LG. LG was OK but was the worst performer among those mentioned.
Benq 1640 very good for its overspeeding capabilities. NEC you have to reflash to take advantage of riplock being removed and other goodies.
I have to disagree with the statement re LG being better because it has a big demand. The more probable explanation re demand is that they have a good marketing and distribution strategy. NEC and BENQ do not because you rarely find them here in the Philippines. This scenario is the same with Intel P4s and Athlon 64's. Athlon 64's kicks the P4's ass when it comes to its archictecture, especially electrical consumpution and heat. But, Intel is still number one because of one big marketing ("polluting minds") strategy.
I hope this helps others who browse this thread and would like to buy a burner.
Maayong adlaw kaninyong tanan!
Yeah, int'l DVD forums like CDRInfo.com forumers who are hardcore experts of DVD Optical Drives there would recomend BenQ or NEC.
But the site is full of LG advertisements.
any suggestion for a GOOD Dual Layer na media?
