Four Cebuanos managed to put up a decent showing during the 9th National Pencak Silat Championships held at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

The Cebuanos produced three gold medals, a silver, and a bronze in the three-day tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Pencak Silat Association (PHILSILAT) led by Sultan Jamallul Kiram III.

Henssy Quinanola, Alexis Enad, April Grace Pilarca and Francis Viscaya of the Society for the Propagation of Pencak Silat made Cebu proud by reaping medals in the Seni (artistic) and Tanding (sparring) events.

Quinanola claimed the first gold for Cebu in the Seni event and also bagged a silver in the Class A Tanding event.

Viscaya got a bronze medal for the Class B Tanding event.

Pilarca claimed the second gold for Team Cebu in the Class C Tanding Event while Enad, who is the youngest in the team at 16 years, reaped a gold in the Class E Tanding event.

The four Cebuanos were part of 75 participants who joined the said tournament held at the badminton hall of the CCSC.

It was also the first time that Cebu participated and hosted the National Pencak Silat Championships since the sport became part of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) in 1992.

Hadji Nur Hbbir Isnani, National head coach of the Philippine National Pencak Silat team, said he was proud that Cebuanos are propagating the sport locally.

Isnani thanked the Cebu City Government for its enthusiastic participation in hosting the tournament./Justin Anjuli K. Vestil, correspondent
