Default Re: The State of Filipino Movies

It will be dead if we think it is dead

Look on the brighter side and forget the mainstream crap
There's the indie films raving awards outside the country - i strongly think we could pull something out of that

think of Maximo Oliveros and how it went on to be nominated in the Independent Spirit Awards alongside Half Nelson, Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You For Smoking, The Lives of Others and Pan's Labyrinth?

think of Kubrador and how both Jeffrey Jetturian and Gina Pareno won outside the country

think of Sigaw and how it is being filmed for Hollywood audience by the same director Yam Laranas and star Iza Calzado alongside Jesse Bradford

i think the industry per se is in a slump, but the talented filmmakers? I think they're just starting to crack out of their shells. money. this is the main issue

House probe eyed on ‘deplorable state’ of film industry

MANILA, Philippines -- A resolution that will look into the “deplorable state” of the local film industry and a possible review of the “heavy taxation” imposed on it has been filed at the House of Representatives.

"The heavy taxation imposed upon the industry should be revisited," said Cagayan de Oro Representative Rufus Rodriguez, author of House Resolution 576.
Rodriguez’s measure also proposed extending business assistance to the industry, particularly the small firm producers and independent filmmakers.

He said the film industry was in a “deplorable state” due to low patronage, low box-office receipts, and its inability to compete with Hollywood-produced movies when it was supposed to be enjoying recognition from the international community.

And Rodriguez blamed this on the high rate of taxes and multiple types of tax -- national and local tax, tax for purposes of flood prevention, among others -- being imposed on local movie productions.

"Because of oppressive taxation and regulations and to bring down the cost of production, the film producers have resorted to low budget projects,” Rodriguez said in a statement Wednesday.

“One such project known as 'pito-pito system [quickie films],' is not a sustainable system conducive to producing quality films," he pointed out.

Rodriguez then called on the government to take immediate and appropriate measures to address the problem squarely.

He said the government, for instance, could provide producers with financial assistance, especially the small ones and the independent filmmakers, the same help accorded to small-and-medium-scale enterprises and entrepreneurs.

Thank God for indie film makers!
As for the rest of the Philippine movie industry, resuscitation is needed!

    I definitely agree!
I am no longer stirred, emotionally and cerebrally, with today's Filipino movies...

all endings are so predictable,so the movie no longer gives us the excitement it should have..... even watching the trailer could tell you the gist of the story (that early!!!).... the plots are way too familiar if not overused.
