How to acquire or teach common sense?

"Common sense" is thought of as the agreement people have by a natural understanding of life and things in it. Thus "common sense" applies when you know how to do something just because you "know how" and haven't had to learn it from someone else or some book or class.

However, you may want to think of "common sense" in a different way.

Dr. Alfred Adler, founder of "Individual Psychology," said people have two ways to approach the world and decide on their behavior (a thought, feeling, or action).

ONE is "common sense," which Adler saw as "the wisdom [sense] the community has in common" about how people should behave among other people. Such behavior builds up the community, and is called "socially useFUL behavior."

The OTHER is called "private logic" (also Private reasoning" or "private intelligence") and is an internal way of thinking that puts the individual ahead of others. This is self-centered or selfish behavior. Instead of building up others or the community, it puts self first and often tears down relationships and the community. Such behavior is called "socially useLESS behavior."

So you don't lack common sense (in Adler's definition) because everyone has it...it is part of the community in which we all live: in religious and philisophical writings, in rules and etiquette and poems and even jokes...the "community's wisdom" is all around, and you take part in it as much as anyone else.
