Media conglomerate ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. said its monthly advertising revenues breached the P1-billion mark in March and April despite the continued slowdown in economy.
"After a slow start in January and February, our clients began to show increasing confidence in the network. We started reversing the trend in March. In April, we would have had record numbers had it not been for the Holy week, where advertisers suspend their regular campaigns for most of the week," said August Benitez, head of Channel 2 sales.
While other networks drastically reduced their rates just to be able to grab more ad minutes, Benitez said ABS-CBN's increasing audience share was enough to encourage clients.
"We focused on adding value to our client offerings by improving our programs. This strategy has resulted in much larger audience share for us in all the important timeblocks. So, for the same budgets, we are now able to offer clients more eyeballs, and ultimately more returns on investments," Benitez added.
Citing data from global market research specialist Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS), ABS-CBN said it had a 44 percent nationwide audience share in February to May 2009, up 22 percent from its closest competitor.
In the first quarter of the year, the Lopez-owned network posted consolidated revenues of P5.29 billion, up 24 percent year-on-year, owing to robust direct sales.
Direct sales during the period surged 76 percent to P2.52 billion, accounting for 48 percent or nearly half of total revenues. These sales consist of cable and Internet subscription fees, and earnings from the sale of products such as magazines, music and video materials.
