Radaza solicits GMA aid to ‘build’ island
LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Arturo Radaza plans to ask for help from Malacañang so the City can raise enough counterpart funds for a proposed 400-hectare reclamation project.
“Admittedly, this project cannot be realized within my term, but at least I have to lay down the foundation. Whoever is the next mayor, all he has to do is finish it,” he said.
The waters off the coast of Barangays Ibo, Buaya, Mactan and Punta Engaño will be the site of the Mactan North Reclamation and Development Project. It is intended to include an international seaport, the expansion of the Mactan Economic Zone and tourism-related projects of the city.
Radaza said the project’s feasibility study, which cost City Hall P6 million, has been completed and approved by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA).
An additional P2.8 million paid for the environmental impact study that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted last September.
To realize the project, President Arroyo should help the City get a loan from a bank, Radaza said.
Congestion is the City’s reason for “building” an island to accommodate more business ventures. The President lauded the City for the project proposal during her visit in April last year.
“We are not copying what Mayor (Tomas) Osmeña did in Cebu City by having his South Road Properties. We have our own vision and for sure, we will be on equal footing with Cebu City soon,” he said.
Some national officials he consulted on the project promised to help convince Malacañang to facilitate a loan for the City, the mayor added. (AIV)
