It's all subjective. I just wish I get to see a Filipino movie that I want to watch because so far, though I know there are some that are good in essence, I still haven't encountered one.

maihap nalang mga nindot na pinoy movies karon
Bisag sa Hollywood he said "karon"... even in Hollywood, the movies that you can watch without feeling guilt and by being sure you can praise it without being wrong because of it's artistic integrity, gamay raman tingali ang ratio to every movie coming out...

That is if you feel guilty about pleasureÂ* ;-b

Unless of course you watch the plethora of films coming out and single out a kajillions kajillions of good ones too, then I must be wrong...

the filipino industry has to realize these issues:

Escalating costs of film production -- especially in the face of the current economic crisis sweeping Asia.

Exhorbitant taxes -- these are onerous and numerous, making the industry among the most heavily taxed in Asia if not the world; among such taxes are the amusement tax, culture tax, flood tax, and tax on raw materials.

Falling box-office receipts of domestic films -- local movies are losing out to bigger-budgeted foreign films.

Film censorship -- the censors body has been accused of arbitrary and too much film censorship to the extent of stunting the artistic development and economic growth of the local movie industry.

Film piracy -- high-tech film pirates deprive legitimate producers of potential income. Piracy forms include unauthorized airing, exhibition, and distribution of films in CAT-TV networks, video theaters, buses, hotels, restaurants, ships, etc., and video reproduction and retail establishments.

"Star system" -- some superstars charge as much as P3-P4 million, in addition to ancillary rights and other fringe benefits, eating up a big chunk of a normal production budget of P15 million.

Cable-TV -- a formidable new opponent making inroads into the traditional domain of movies.

The cost of production has dramatically dropped due to the availability of digital video. However, the transfer from video to film is still expensive. While film projectors are still around, filmmakers who wish to get a piece of the market pie will have to pay the transfer.

Default How to Define A Typical Pinoy ROMANTIC film

    [font=arial]
Basically if you watch all the romantic Filipino fims, be they be romantic comedies or drama, you'd generally find the following characteristics:

    1) The Title will definitely be a Song Title (Till I Met You, You are the One, Sana Dalawa ang Puso Ko).

    2) Consequently the Song will be the musical theme for the movie. You'd hear it often enough in the film itself.

    3) Often, the main characters fall in love... AT FIRST SIGHT. You know the first Kilig moment.

    4) But sooner they'll be at odds with their feelings for each other... most of the common sources of conflicts are:
4a) Class conflict. One is rich the other poor (often its the lady lead who is poor). Or one is      smart, sophisticated while the other is simple and pure of heart

4b) A third party. One of the romantic leads is involved with someone else. Someone who is often spiteful, possessive, and jealous... which makes one wonder though, will all these bad qualities paano naging sila? hmmmmm

4c) Strict kasi ng parents eh.

4d) Secrets of the past or unacceptable bad behavior or manners that only Love can change or accept. Sigh!

    5) Of course the romantic leads must have their sidekicks on either side, often not as attractive as the romantic leads, faithful and loyal, eager to offer advice or comedic relief. Sometimes the sidekicks also fall for each other, presenting a second love story.

Kinds of sidekicks: The Best Friend, the understanding Parent (only one), The Understanding Relative, puwede si Lolo, Lola, Auntie, Ninong, Ninang

    6) Of course there must be field trips to the country, going back to the roots. In the fertile soil of the farmlands, romance blossoms into love.

    7) There is plenty of eye locking which last between 30 seconds to 5 minutes of reel.

8 ) This is often a Cinderella tribute where either of the leads 'magically' transform with one realizing how handsome or really beautiful the other is.

    9) The major conflict should come at max 40 minutes before the ending, the resolution comes mga 30 minutes later after 10 minutes of the 'my days are miserable without you, I miss you, I need you' montage.

    10) The love quarrel should always be a shouting match, in a public place. The make up scene should also be something like that too.

    11) A chase scene always occurs.

    12) The films ends with a typical hopeful ending. The typical endings are:

                  12a) With a kiss
                  12b) In a church wedding
12c) In a place of transportation: airport, bus station, ship dock, within a vehicle

But often these endings are just hopeful beginnings. Not often you would see what happens after they made up or return to each other's arms.

    Did I miss anything?

Lately, Philippine cinema are characterized as more on LOVE...LOVE on the younger generation where plots are soooo predictable that led me to thinking that paying to watch for these flicks are a waste of money. (No offense meant). Obviously, their target market are: teens and the artista-fanatic individuals of some fan base. Though there are a few exceptions which i will be waiting for its' release on video rentals, hehe

I believe that Filipino film makers are more than limiting their imaginative brains to love drama/comedy whose titles don't sound any Filipino at all. A few film makers whose works are outstanding and received good reviews from foreign critics are more recognized abroad than in our own land.

It all boils down to money. Phil. Setting--> No big producer companies are willing to shell out big bucks if it does not appeal the general public.

So far, one of the best Filipno films I've seen was "Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon". If not for the required filmshowing in school, I would have missed one of Cinema's finest.

Oh well, if it makes majority of Filipinos happy, and once in a while bring out the smiles in their faces in the midst of crisis, so who cares?! Let them be.
