The movie is just imitating life. A sad fact of course.

One way to really get back at these Tagalog snobs... don't speak Tagalog to them when they're in Cebu. Speak in our dialect and only in our dialect, ug mahimo apili lang ininglis ginagmay. Kay ug kitay moadto sa Manila magtinagalog gyud ta. Pabinisayaa pud na sila diri. Aron magkat-on sab na sila. Mga anti-pinoy gyud ni sila!

This is what i always do when i encounter some of these "racist" northerners.

yeah, the scripts are rude, but there's nothing we can do about it, that's how the movie goes.
saka it is fictional at kathang isip lamang..wag seryosohin, makitid daw utak ng nagseryoso nun..
They have high respects for Bisaya (daw), sabi nila..

    duh! whatever...
that's a lame excuse for somebody to portray certain ethnic groups negatively.

we can insult individuals and the can file a lawsuit for oral defamation. what then is the difference when you do exactly the same thing to a group of people? isn't that supposedly much worse?

it's ridiculous really that someone with even a bit of self respect could even come up with such line of reasoning.

you stop complaining when you know you're not honoring and supporting filipino movies. or better yet, produce your own movie and do the same thing as "sss" did.

working in a corporate world here in Manila is not that easy. true that discrimination is rampant. but if you will just stand out and show what bisdak can do, they won't stop praising you.

if being Pinoy is to converse in impeccable Tagalog, then i guess i'm not one. 77 akong grade sa Filipino pag highschool. hahaha...

it's true. they have to do something about this. the movie being art, Juday being pretty, or the movie being a good one is no excuse to just let this be.

I've seen the movie. The jokes were mostly shallow and dry. And the controversial lines.. if you ask me, I didn't notice it until my partner nudged me 'coz I was half-asleep. haha.. Someone even laughed sarcastically during that scene. If I were you guys, try watching the movie, 'coz honestly it didn't have any impact on me. I can't actually recommend the movie 'coz it was boring, but the acting was nice.

Now with regards to the "racist" issue. Let's just say, I was a little bit offended. But I've seen this set-up countless times. This isn't something new, there is some discrimination in Manila, that's true. But then again, pointing our fingers at ABSCBN or Star Cinema doesn't make any sense, they've given their colleagues here in Visayas and Mindanao a big break there in Manila, Ina Reformina among others, is doing well there. They're just showing what is really happening out there. But in the end, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.

I find it interesting that topics like these are often brought up in a defensive manner, as Pimentel did. why is that?

I have not seen the film, and am reacting to the reactions and commentaries in these threads. I would not go as far as saying the film is racist. I think its just insensitive & politically incorrect, while the reactions & commentaries often take things out of context. unfortunately, there are facts that one must deal with. here’s a bit of that…

manila being the biggest city in the country, is home to countless numbers of people from the provinces in search of better paying jobs. included in these numbers are countless women (from all parts of the Philippines) who moved there to work as househelp. proportion-wise, combining numbers from the visayas-speaking regions probably account for a large number of househelp in manila, practically out-numbering those who come from other parts of Luzon, who are not necessarily tagalog speakers (i.e. could be ilocano, kapampangan, etc.)

what I’m trying to say is that there is a high chance that manila households who employ house help are likely to have someone who is from somewhere in the visayas regions. unfortunately, most of these househelp are not the better educated representatives of such regions—so don’t expect them to speak impeccable Filipino & English (as these languages are expected to be taught in schools and not at home). is it so strange then that their Filipino & English sound funny sometimes? it seems to me that the slur in the movie is not a generalization. it is an observation and perpetuation of a fact. those who do such things may not be intentionally racist. again, just insensitive and politically incorrect. and if you think ALL tagalogs are like that, then you are being insensitive & politically incorrect. perhaps slightly racist too.

two wrongs don’t make things right.

good point...u mentioned "insensitive" and "politically incorrect". well, u hit the nail right!

yeah, i also agree that we should not think all tagalogs like that as we will also be guilty of the same thing.

u r correct also to note that most househelps in Manila are visayans...

and the movie though fictional, portrays something in reality...

but comparing sa "desperate housewives" case, the hollywood producers made public apology, which in contrast our local producers for the SSS movie didn't even budge a bit...now, how arrogant and very insensitive is that?

maluoy intawn mo sa mga poor visayan yayas & helpers who adventured to Manila just to get decent income...they need praise, not ridicule (worse, sa salida pa gyud)...luoy pa, daug2x pa gyud sa salida...

    the topic is boiling...

    what else ppl? speak up!

for me, yeah, yayas and helpers were already ridiculed in real life then there's this movie showing us the hard slap of truth that some people degrades or better say discriminates them for being yayas or helpers who are these people who usually discriminates their fellow human beings? i realized that it's not the race but it's the character of person that we are talking here, naa pud baya mga bisaya nga mu-degrade sa mga katabang sa panimalay.

but all in all, we deserve an apology or rectification in that movie. a cut of that particular scene maybe?

we know lagi dat yayas and helpers were already ridiculed in real life...so?

Pimentel asks the movie makers or MTRCB to cut the ethnic slur scene which they still didn't...

apology or rectification by ABS or Star Cinema? God only knows...naghuwat ra cguro cla sa ikasulti ni Archbishop Gaudencio or Cardinal Vidal for that matter...LOLZ
they know that the yayas & helpers in phils has no organization or association, not like the pinoy doctors & nurses in US that formed a strong cohesive force in the US labor industry...
