Foley is Blog: Travel weary
By Mick Foley
March 2, 2006
I should probably rename “Foley is Blog” to “Foley is Tired” for this week’s entry. Actually “Foley Phones It In” might be appropriate as well, for I doubt this particular piece of writing will strike anyone as great, or even inspired literature.
Man, it’s hard to get the body regulated after doing so much flying in so many different time zones. I was able to sleep a little on the flight home, and I did catch 16 hours of sleep in two separate eight-hour sessions on Sunday. That was followed by no sleep at all on Monday night and two big hours of sleep last night. I’m writing this in Peoria, Ill., where I will be a special guest at the Peoria Rivermen ice hockey game. My flight tomorrow leaves at 6 a.m., so with a 3:30 a.m. wake-up call coming my way, my prospects for catching up on my beauty rest don’t look too good.
I was able to catch the “Dancing with the Stars” finale on Sunday in between my two sleeping sessions. I was definitely disappointed that Stacy didn’t win it — or even make the final two — but she was so gracious in defeat. She had been so obviously wronged by the fan voting system that she really came across as a winner to the nearly 28 million viewers who tuned in. I expect we’ll see really big things from Stacy in the upcoming year.
The Philippines
Despite the incredible travel demands, an international incident at the airport and the near overthrow of the Filipino government, I think everyone had a great trip. The fans were incredibly enthusiastic, the two shows were sellouts and we were treated extremely well by the promotion. Of course for me, the trip was especially memorable as I was able to spend two full days with my sponsored child, Herma Grace, and her family.
It wasn’t as easy as I had thought it would be. Herma was extremely shy and was understandably overwhelmed by the surroundings. For a little girl who had never left her small town, it was quite a whirlwind tour, involving quite a few “firsts” in her life: the first time on an airplane; the first time in a hotel; the first time in a movie theater. And, obviously, the first time witnessing a spectacle like a live WWE show, followed by photos with guys like Big Show, Shelton Benjamin, Val Venis and even my arch nemesis Edge (more on him later). She even got to see Eugene pull down John Cena’s pants at breakfast, a situation which immediately made me think of Owen Hart doing the same thing to J.R. on the Wrestle Vessel cruise. The only real difference being that Cena was wearing underwear, while J.R. was left in a more natural state.
No, it wasn’t easy, but I firmly believe that things that are worked for are often more rewarding. And my time with Herma Grace was exactly that rewarding. I expect so many of the memories to last a lifetime: Her tiny voice, saying, “Hello daddy,” when I first called the room. The beauty of her scrapbook, each page decorated with intricate colored paper cutouts — each photo and letter I’d written proudly displayed as a cherished family keepsake. The way each child, Herma, Kenneth, Marvin, Queenie, and Blassie hugged the Disney stuffed toys I had brought over as gifts. Perhaps most of all, I’ll remember the words of Herma’s mother at dinner following the wrestling live event on our last night together.
I had fully expected Herma’s English to be perfect, as her letters are beautifully written. But apparently people from Mindanao, where the family is from, are very self-conscious of their accents and as a result don’t feel all that comfortable with their English. Herma only spoke a little, and only when spoken to. I think her dad only spoke a few words during our entire time together. Herma’s mother had said little other than “yes, sir” and “thank you.” So, I really didn’t know what to expect when the Christian Children’s Fund worker said, “Herma’s mother would like to say something to you.”
“Mick,” she said very slowly, trying. I thought to put together a small question. Instead, this tiny, proud woman, who was raising five healthy, beautiful children (despite struggling with the type of poverty that most of us here in the U.S. can only imagine) proceeded to hit me with a barrage of compliments, the likes of which I have never known.
Don’t get me wrong, people say nice things to me all the time. Probably nicer things than I deserve. But these compliments went beyond nice. They were just beautiful and they seemed to go on, uninterrupted for several minutes. The words weren’t easy for her; she struggled with each one, which is why I think I’ll never forget them. They were so rewarding because she worked so hard for them.
So, if any of you “Foley is Blog” readers run into me, don’t feel like you have to say anything nice to me. I’m good for a while.
International Incident
It seemed odd to us that our little incident at the airport became front page news in the Philippine Star, a national newspaper. The country was about to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the overthrow of the corrupt Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship — and up to 1,800 bodies were still buried in a mudslide near Leyte — yet an unfortunate incident involving a completely unprofessional, racist journalist hit the front page.
As I mentioned last week, the trip from my house to the Holiday Inn in Manila, door to door, is about 32 hours. We entered the baggage claim area at the Ninoy Aquino Airport about 31 hours into that journey at approximately 5 a.m. Apparently, this journalist had attempted to climb onto the baggage claim carrousel to shoot video footage of our wrestlers. He had been asked to step down by our security man, who happens to be black.
When I heard the commotion, our security man was standing on the carrouse as the journalist rained about 10 "F.U.’s" on him. No, not the John Cena move either. I’m talking about the “F” bomb. As in "F**k you." The journalist was extending both middle fingers as he did this, including the middle finger of the hand he held his camcorder in. So yes, as he dropped “F” bomb after “F” bomb, he was taping our beloved security guy who had done nothing to deserve the abuse.
It was then that the journalist, feeling like, I guess, the “F.U.’s” weren’t enough, threw the “N” word in the mix. Yeah the “N” word. As in, “F**k you, n***er!” 10 more times. It was at this point in the proceedings that I became involved. I read in the paper that several wrestlers got involved and that physical restraint was required to resolve the situation. As far as I know, I was the only wrestler who actually spoke to the jerk, and the only restraint that was required was self-restraint as the guy should really have been smacked around for his behavior.
I know my little promo was taped by several people, including the “F” bomb dropping, “N” word using little “p****” (use your imagination here). I’m not sure of my exact words, but they were something very close to: “You are ruining this trip for us. You are the first thing that we are seeing, and you are ruining the trip. You don’t use that type of language when you talk to people. You don’t call people those words. I have been to the Philippines before. I know how nice the people here are. But the rest of the guys haven’t been here. All they’re seen of the Philippines is you. And you are ruining the trip for them.”
The journalist admitted in the paper that he had “insulted” our guy. But, he claimed nonetheless that he was in the right.
“Your mother wears army boots” is an insult.
“You make Al Snow look like Jack Brisco is an insult.”
“F*ck you, n***er!” is an outrage. As long as I’m pseudo-cursing, let me share with you my initial thought upon meeting Melina on Monday night: “Holy sh*t!”
This is way more than I planned on writing ,and I really need to catch a nap before I go to the hockey game. I’ll get back to wrestling in next week’s entry. I will talk about my possible upcoming WrestleMania showdown with Edge as well as talk about independent promoters who either bounced checks on me or flat out didn’t pay me. Actually, I’ll talk about them in two weeks — that gives them time to pay me, so they won’t need to be named and disgraced right here on “Foley is Blog.”
Instead, I’ll talk a little bit about my new book next week. I agreed to write one for WWE literally seconds before beginning this entry. It should be out next spring.
One last parting image for you: Imagine my surprise when I saw who I was sitting next to me for the 15-hour flight from Manila to Los Angeles: “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
“Ric, this can’t be how you imagined spending your birthday,” I said.
At that point, both John Cena and Triple H independently volunteered to switch seats in an attempt to break up the newly formed Flair-Foley merger. To their mutual surprise, we both declined the request. And to just about everyone’s surprise (including my own), Ric Flair and I talked for several hours. We did discuss our differences, but we also talked about family and politics, with Ric discussing his possible run for North Carolina governor and me discussing my long-range goal of becoming United States ambassador to the Philippines.
Hey, I’ll admit to not being all that comfortable at first. But I did enjoy myself, and I think Ric did, too. That’s good because upon entering United Airlines Flight No. 212 from Los Angeles to Washington, I looked at my boarding pass: 1-B. Who do you think was sitting in 1-A? Woooo!
from Rob Van Dam:
MARCH 3 -- Hello, RVD fans, and haters that undoubtedly exist and are reading anyway in hopes of exposing under-greatness to validate their self existences. Hi. Greetings.
The trip to Manila was awesome. 5-star hotel attached to a 4-story mall, Gold's Gym next door, police escorts everywhere we went and the people were the friendliest people ever! I felt like Elvis Presley walking around to screams and smiles. Two sellout packed nights in the same arena so the travel was nonexistent once we arrived in the Phillipines. I even got to go to Mr. and Mrs. Aranetti's huge-ass house. They made the whole trip possible and, from what I understand, just about everything that happens in Manilla. This was one of my favorite international trips I've been on.
Hope everyone has ben enjoying watching me kick ass since my return. I get the feeling you have. I like to think I add a little something to the show, ya know? By the way, there has been tons of RVD signs lately and I f&*king love it! I really do get energy from that which can not be taken away from me by politics. I thank you.
I'll be the next guest at my store, RVD's 5-Star Comics and Wrestling, on March 9th from 6-8pm. I'm expecting this to be another big signing with an enormous turnout of positive energy exchanged. You tell me how cool I am, I'm positive you mean it. Cool! We'll have the polaroid camera fired up, 8x10's to sign and we'll be raffling off some kick-ass prizes. After my matches, I often save my used wrist tape to give to some fans representing on the way out. Sometimes, due to secured backstage exits or whatever, I don't see the fans and then guess what happens? I end up with authentic, ring-worn wrist tape to give to the first 50 or so fans that come to my signing on the 9th! C'mon, that's a piece of history dude! Call the store for info.
Anyone getting excited about One Night Stand 2? Of course we are!
The television show I recommend for you fellow spiritually inclined is Medium. Show's awesome. Easily one of my favorites all week and it's about damn time I put it over.
That's another week, folks. I have to go pat myself on the back for keeping up with this update so regularly. Told you I could do it.
Making Mondays enjoyable again, this has been your favorite wrestler, and mine,
RVD
