the question itself is vague...when say "given" di man ka muhatag ug respeto sa taw based on nothing
but still we respect him as a being and regardless of anything above than that so karon dapat pud
e-categorize ang respect to a certain level.

and also if you saw someone in deed or accomplishment worthy of your respect so meaning you give that respect. but still he or she has earned it from you.

para nako respect is a reaction of gratitude and honor towards you it is still given because someone has to recognize or acknowledge a deed or accomplishment so that this "respect" is given or bestowed upon.
    bottom line:
dili mana nimo ma earned kung wala'y muhatag nga lain tao

    question should be:

"Is Respect is earned or something you ask for?"

Because respect is an self attainment based on virtue that is not quantified like something described as given or handed over.

Its also your building you image out of your deeds---good or bad
and its how different individual look at you, some may commend you and some may loathe on that same thing.

So it's more earned and the idea of given cannot be a proponent to it
Or you cannot take it literally when someone say "I give my respect to you" or "let's give our respects to"
It just someone expressing they have respect on someone than have to "give" it to them

I hope I made sense here

You mean if u are being respected by that certain person you have to respect him also in reciprocation other than basing something in deed or virtue?

Respect is not a commodity to be exchanged. it has to have a certain value or merit that cant be quantified
in a manner where you give it back in based on equal gratitude.
