Why does respect have to be earned?

How then would you treat strangers? Wouldn't you at least respect them?

Respecting people is a given, but then you stop respecting a person because you decide one doesn't deserve it.

I am starting to worry for the future of the planet.

You earn praises, compliments, awards and any other rewards you can think of.
But you respect people as a given, despite your preconceptions, biases and other judgmental opinions.
No matter what part of the earth a person comes from, you shake hands with them with your best hand.
