The UN has been involved in Somalia.

A conflict with North Korea would result in Seoul being decimated that's why action has been limited to sanctions.

Iran may still be attacked if they pursue nuclear weapons.

Syrian leadership has been criticized by the US. If they continue on their current path then they too could see themselves toppled with the help of NATO should the UN deem force necessary. Remember the US has pledged to abide by UN mandates which means getting an international consensus. This isn't all about the West although Western countries generally bear the burden of these decisions in terms of cost and manpower.

The UN is ineffective as far as controlling the whims of permanent members? Permanent members have undertaken military actions against foreign countries contrary to existing UN Resolutions. All excluding none are guilty; the Brits and French in Suez, the Russians in Hungary, Georgia, etc. the Chinese in Tibet and most recently the Americans in Iraq.

The UN may not be perfect, but it's the best organization we've got for dealing with a wide range of international issues and it seems to be functioning better lately than it has in a long time.

How will they ever know if Iran have already developed nuclear weapons? And if Iran already have, would the US/NATO dare to attack the heartland of the Shias? And see the UN double standard here while Israel is not denying nor confirming about their nuclear weapons they are not subjected to IAEA inspections while Iran is complying all the IAEA standards is subjected to multiple sanctions and the assets freezing.

4. Bahrain & Yemen..... no I don't see the double standard. Egypt had good relations with the West yet their leader was told bluntly to go when it became evident that the majority wanted him gone.

5. Iraq war took place during previous American administration. Surely you've must have noticed the vastly improved international relations and cross cultural cooperation since the current US president promised to respect UN mechanisms. No use living in the past, the Bush days are long gone!

Iran has the third largest oil reserves in the world so if oil is what the West was after Iran would be a far more attractive target than Libya. This conflict is all about a mentally unbalanced dictator turning his guns against his own people once they rose up against him. The West had nothing to do with the wave of protests sweeping the region, but Gadhafi's brutality (far worse than the other places you mentioned) in response to street protests forced the West to choose sides.

Take out the oil of Libya in the equation and you will not find a NATO plane or American drones dropping bombs in Libya. Try to imagine that Libya has zero oil. What do you think? People are also dying Yemen and Syria because their leaders chose to fight the masses. So why are you not seeing a NATO plane or American drone dropping bombs or targeting their despotic leaders in these countries? Di man kaha oil ang hinungdan.

Because quite simply Gadhafi is a known murderer and when he sent tanks to destroy an entire city leaders knew there would be an enormous slaughter. There was a call for a no fly zone which received proper backing from the UN. Should other countries display similar barbaric intentions against civilian population there is a good chance they will meet the same fate, but don't expect everything to happen at the same time. The West doesn't have enough resources to intervene in Yemen, Syria, Bahrain etc right this moment. The most pressing matter (in terms of direct threat to civilians) in the region at that time was without a doubt Libya.

No resources? tell it to the marines. So why concentrate the resources in Libya alone when Syria and Yemen are also critical to the security in the region and their people are dying as well? Here is the list of Arab Uprising! I' been monitoring this one since Tunisia.

Syria - Israel pressures the US to take easy on Syria. A regime change could be a disaster on Israel which shares its borders.

Bahrain - A US puppet which the Saudi sent its troops to help on the crack down.

Yemen - Another US Puppet which the west lightly condemns.

Egypt - US puppet already went down.

Tunisha - US puppet who went down first.

Saudi- the biggest US puppet already cracking down against protesters.

Iran - has oil but it is military capable to retaliate against Israel.

British & French corporations already dealt with Libya so getting involved in a conflict with the Libyan government not only disrupted supply.... it clearly jeopardized their existing operations.

Exactly! It may not be literally oil but the big business that goes with it. Daghan pa man gud wa kahibawo nga after the first Iraq war, mga dagkong E&P (exploration and production) nga nag operate didto mga Amercano ug British na. Name the big boys tua sila didto, BP, UNOCAL, Chevron etc,... mga kontractor sa civil in the likes of Brown & Root, Bechtel, Halliburton and many others. Ang wa mo supporta sa gubat like France -OUT! na wala ngadto ang TOTAL ug ubang mga dagkung E&P sa France. Karon namumba na ug apil ang France sa Libya kay di sila pa alkanse unya sa mga Kano ug sa Bitoy ug magbahinay na sa concession.
