    Thyroid Cancer Effects in Children

    Staff Report

    August 2005

The main consequence of the Chernobyl accident is thyroid cancer in children, some of whom were not yet born at the time of the accident. Following the vapour explosion and fire at the Chernobyl reactor, radioactive iodine was released and spread in the surrounding area. Despite measures taken, children in southern Belarus and northern Ukraine, were exposed to radiation in the weeks following the accident , particularly by consuming milk from pastured cows and leafy vegetables that had been contaminated with radioactive iodine. These children were also relatively more vulnerable because their usual diet, in general, was low in iodine.

Chernobyl | Chernobyl Accident | Chernobyl Disaster

The report continues: "The predicted lifetime excess cancer and leukaemia deaths for 200,000 liquidators, 135,000 evacuees from the 30 km zone, 270,000 residents of the SCZs ['strict control zones'] were 2200 for liquidators, 160 for evacuees, and 1600 among residents of the SCZs. This total, about 4000 deaths projected over the lifetimes of the some 600,000 persons most affected by the accident, is a small proportion of the total cancer deaths from all causes that can be expected to occur in this population. It must be stressed that this estimate is bounded by large uncertainties."

Based on what I've read in here, it's the other way around -- it's the big earthquakes that have an effect on our Planet's orbit.

Tsunami Geology - What Causes a Tsunami?

What causes a tsunami?... A tsunami is a large ocean wave that is caused by sudden motion on the ocean floor. This sudden motion could be an underwater earthquake with a Richter magnitude above 6.75, a powerful volcanic eruption, or an underwater landslide. The impact of a large meteorite could also cause a tsunami. Tsunamis travel across the open ocean at great speeds and build into large deadly waves in the shallow water of a shoreline.

Subduction Zones are Potential Tsunami Locations

Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes generated in a subduction zone, an area where an oceanic plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonic forces. The friction between the subducting plate and the overriding plate is enormous. This friction prevents a slow and steady rate of subduction and instead the two plates become "stuck".

    Accumulated Seismic Energy

As the stuck plate continues to descend into the mantle the motion causes a slow distortion of the overriding plage. The result is an accumulation of energy very similar to the energy stored in a compressed spring. Energy can accumulate in the overriding plate over a long period of time - decades or even centuries.

    Earthquake Causes Tsunami

Energy accumulates in the overriding plate until it exceeds the frictional forces between the two stuck plates. When this happens, the overriding plate snaps back into an unrestrained position. This sudden motion is the cause of the tsunami - because it gives an enormous shove to the overlying water. At the same time, inland areas of the overriding plate are suddenly lowered.

Tsunami Races Away From the Epicenter

The moving wave begins travelling out from where the earthquake has occurred. Some of the water travels out and across the ocean basin, and, at the same time, water rushes landward to flood the recently lowered shoreline.

Tsunamis Travel Rapidly Across Ocean Basis

Tsunamis travel swiftly across the open ocean. The map below shows how a tsunami produced by an earthquake along the coast of Chile in 1960 traveled across the Pacific Ocean, reaching Hawaii in about 15 hours and Japan in less than 24 hours.

You're confusing wave speed with tsunamis. Tsunami causes are geological in nature, not meteorologiocal:

Another factor that can affect wave speeds is global warming. Geophysicists say that as the ocean surfaces warm up, the speed of planetary waves will increase. the speed of such waves has already increased substantially. But this hasn't been noticed until now as the satellites that monitor the oceans are only recent advances in technology. Latest research says that the wave speeds will increase by about 30% within the end of 21st century.

unsa may problema diay kung naa earthquake, tsunami, or any other disasters? those are old news. we will all die eventually, so what's the fuss all about? self-preservation? propagation of species? by design, those are all automatic. everyone will die and the universe will not even notice.

Philippines safe from Japan nuke meltdown: scientists

MANILA, Philippines - Government scientists assured the public on Sunday that any nuclear meltdown in Japan will not affect the Philippines.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officials said unlike previous nuclear meltdowns such as Chernobyl in Russia, nuclear power plants in Japan have structures aimed at stopping the spread of the radioactive waste.

“For the Philippines right now, there is no significant effect but we are monitoring situation so we can advise officials on what is the best action,” said Dr. Alum dela Rosa, director, of the DOST’s Philippine Nuclear Research Institute.

DOST Secretary Mario Montejo told ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) that the situation in nuclear radiation threat in Japan should not be compared with Chernobyl.

“We have to distinguish that the plant in Japan is different from Chernobyl,” he stressed.

“It has [a] containment [unit],” he explained. “Even if there is meltdown, the radioactive waste is contained in reactor inside the structure.”

In a worst-case scenario, any radioactive cloud from Japan will not affect the Philippines, he added.

“Iyung worst case ng meltdown, for the next 3 days it is not going to the Philippines to Australia,” Montejo said. “Even if, for the sense of comfort, ang wind pattern outside of Japan, ‘di pupunta sa atin.”

    Fukushima nuclear power plant accident

Japan's nuclear safety agency rated an accident at an earthquake-hit nuclear plant at four on the international scale from 0 to 7, an official said Sunday.

On the International Nuclear Event Scale, a level four incident means a nuclear reactor accident "with local consequences".

The 1979 Three Mile Island accident in the United States was rated five while the 1986 Chernobyl disaster was a seven.

It is on the same level as the worst nuclear incident Japan has experienced, matching the 1999 accident in which a critical nuclear reaction hit an uranium processing plant in Tokaimura resulting in a radiation leak.

"Right now we are considering the accident should be rated four," said the official of Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, referring to the latest nuclear accident following Friday's monster earthquake.

"The rating may be changed in accordance with the development of the condition," he added.

An explosion sent plumes of smoke spewing from the ageing Fukushima No. 1 plant in northern Japan, raising fears of a possible meltdown a day after the facility's cooling system was damaged in a massive quake.

The government declared an atomic emergency and said tens of thousands of people living within 20 kilometres (12 miles) of the plant should leave after an explosion at the nuclear plant Saturday.

But the operator Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) said the structure encasing the reactor had collapsed at the time of an earthquake aftershock but the steel reactor inside it was not ruptured. – ANC, Agence France-Presse

there are 55 nuclear power plant in Japan. Nuclear Power Plant is different from nuclear bomb. Based from what I searched it only converts water into energry to make electricity (something like that). It supports 30+% of japan's electricity.

movement of tectonic plates is natural. It happens all the time. Global warming doesnt affect it.
