TS, I have trouble speaking in tagalog also because I am bisaya LOL anyhow, being Filipino is within you. As long as you still embrace your culture and practice Filipino values. That's all that matters buddy. Hey! Nakakaintindi ka naman, ayos lang yan!
i'm a bit bothered by that too. i see a lot of other ethnicities here in the united states that are still very fluent in their native tongues although they WERE BORN here. I feel jealous sometimes that they are so well connected with their roots... and I feel ashamed that most of the filipinos that i know only know how to speak one language...and that is ENGLISH.
I came to the united states when i was eleven.. so i already had a good grasp of BISAYA and even tagalog. i managed to retain my fluency in both languages and learn english at the same time. i think being multilingual is such a big advantage, and that is why when my little nieces came here, i also partook in making sure that they also remain BISDAK as much as possible. I was only partly successful. My oldest niece who was 9 then is still BISDAK but my younger niece who was 7 can no longer speak the language. She understands but she's embarrassed to speak in bisaya. We encouraged her to speak the language and even FORCED her sometimes... but, we get no response. it's pretty sadand frustrating.
PS: i just noticed.. this thread is OLD! 2007 pa?! kinsay gaukay ani?![]()
