yeah i agree..good thing both brands stays on top...
just wanted to share some pics how nikon competed with the canon dominance during the past years

    canon clearly dominated 2004 olympics

    but in 2008 olympics...

so i wonder how the nikon will play against with canon in olympics 2012......these guys are not hobbyists...so they know much better than we do (not in general, coz some here are pros too)..

I attended a war/journalist/sport photog workshop conducted by EPA chief photog Dennis Sabangan. He explained that photogs of a certain rank get a refresh of gear every 18 months. You get to keep the gear regardless of condition. A good motivation to make sure it doesn't get damaged or stolen.

The 1D3 (Q1 2007- Q4 2009) had an AF issue that motivated companies like AP, AFP, Getty, Reuters, epa, etc to go with Nikon. A pro camera that cannot focus is garbage. The issue was soon resolved but the damage has been done.

The 1D4 (Q1 2010 - Present) was introduced 4 days after the D3s and does not have the AF issue. It sports nearly double the pixel density of a D3s.

The reason given by Canon was based on the demands of their main market for this camera, the photojournalist. They wanted to carry shorter/slower focal lengths (that is generally lighter) and make up for it with cropping. Per DxO's site that is why the D3s 12MP has a 1-2 stop advantage over the 1D4.

Now last year Canon announced a slew of new super tele glass (we shall call them "2010 Canon glass" to distinguish it from the "1999 Canon glass").

Weight & Price as of Feb 7, 2011

    1999 Canon Super Teles

    300mm IS 2550g $4,635
    400mm IS 5370g $7,600
    500mm IS 3870g $6,700
    600mm IS 5360g $8,800

Weight & Price as of Feb 9, 2011

    2007-2011 Nikkor Super teles

    200-400mm VR II 3360g $6,799
    200mm VR II 2930g $5,999.95
    300mm VR II 2900g $4,635
    400mm VR 4620g $8,899.95
    500mm VR 3880g $8,499.00
    600mm VR 5080g $10,299.95

    2008-2011 Canon Super teles

    200-400mm IS (between 2.6-3.1kg & $7,700-8,400)
    200mm IS 2520g $5,700
    300mm IS II 2350g $6,599 by March
    400mm IS II 3850g $10,499 by March
    500mm IS II 3190g $9,499 by May
    600mm IS II 3920g $11,999 by June

Feel free to verify the prices of the Canon & Nikon glass for today's prices. It should not be that different from what I posted.

As you can see the 1999 Canon glass is cheaper than Nikon glass. While some of the Nikon glass are lighter than the 1999 glass. More expensive than the Nikon glass, the 2010 Canon glass is significantly lighter than both competing product lines.

I know of one photog who was able to handle an in-production copy of the 400mm IS II at the Australian Open and he said that the weight loss is so worth the upgrade and he is looking to getting one as soon as it comes out.

Lighter weight is not its sole improvement and if you want to learn more about the other improvements go to Canon Digital Learning Center - Canon Updates Super-Telephoto Lenses and Extenders

What I notice is that Canon designed the 2010 glass to be videographer-friendly and designed it for digital in mind. So in theory it will not be outresolved by 65MP (FF) and 25MP (1.6x crop) sensors. Giving this a useful life of 10 years.

So what is my forecast this 2012 London Games? I expect more Canon Super Teles.

The data is accurate on both my end and inkinian's. It is also easily verifiable via Google.

My price reference was B&H Photo Video Digital Cameras, Photography, Camcorders

Canon lens weight Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EF Lens Lineup

Nikon lens weight Digital Camera Lenses | Nikon Camera lenses | NIKKOR Optics

Photojournalist wanting more pixels then more ISO can be watched at YouTube - Roadshow: Why is Canon pushing megapixels so hard on the EOS 7D?

Now as for the 2010 Glass price I expect it to be more affordable in 12 months time.

For these reason of a) Strengthening Peso and b) street price.

    a) The Philippine Peso standads at PHP 43.695 to USD1.00. HSBC sees peso hitting 37.50:$1 this year | The Philippine Star >> News >> Business and P35.50 by this time next year.

    b) Street price is 10-20% lower than MSRP.

Combine both and prices for the 2010 Glass will be 30-40% less than MSRP if you use pesos as payment.

As for the phased out 1999 glass I do not expect prices to go lower to sale prices because neither the Nikon glass or 2010 glass will be that cheap. Quite the opposite I expect prices of the 1999 glass to go higher each passing day as inventory runs out. Unlike bodies lenses dont depreciate that badly unless the replacement model is that closely priced.

When Canon/Nikon announces a replacement model any production of the model being phased out is discontinued. They just allow a stock out on the product.

The thread is about lens refreshes and how the product announcement of Canon & Nikon influences each brand's product development.

Because buying gear that gets phased out the next day, week or month sucks. Better to be informed about the potential of replacement and making an informed decision.

I see the advancements of Canon/Nikon as a seesaw. A few years Canon is on top, a few years Nikon is on top.

Because being 2nd best half the time is better than being 3rd, 4th or 5th all the time.
