My bosses finally posted an update on our experiment in the front page of our webpage.
Check it out if you're intersted.

lol i grasp what your saying..

    Default Re: Ultracold Physics

Hello Guys! Want to see some thing cool? or maybe not...

Here is an animation of our quadrupole trap being converted into a quadrupole-ioffe trap which shows our ultracold atoms in our cryogenic environement.

Sorry for the technical jargon. Anyway, the final image that you will see is a harmonic trap. The atoms are held together or trapped by magnetic fields formed by superconducting solenoids forming a anti-helmholtz configuration (I think engineers will know a lot about this) and as well as extra coil called 'Ioffe'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_trap_(atoms) http://www.quantum-munich.de/fileadm...etic_Traps.pdf The Ioffe-Pritchard Trap
Anyway, this trap will be our main ingredient in forming a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC or the 5TH state of matter) in a cryogenic environment.
Bose-Einstein Condensate BEC - What is it and where did the idea come from?
If we succeed, we will be the 2nd one to have a BEC in a cryogenic environment, 1st being the pioneering group in Paris. http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs...801.3538v1.pdf

Here is the animation link again, if you didn't read through above.

PS: If you are wondering why I always talk about this CRYOGENIC environment. Anyway, the field I'm working on is ultracold atoms. We don't obtained these ultracold atoms by conventional refrigeration techniques, however, we do it by means of laser cooling with the aide of Radio-Frequency evaporative cooling. These methods have already garnered several Nobel prizes in 2 different years. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1997
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2001
This field although not very known to the public is very very very hot for physicist. Even as important as particle physics mainly because it has the possibility of simulating other quantum systems "Quantum Simulator." Anyway, these BECs are made using a lasers and a ultra high vacuum (UHV) environment.

Superconductivity, on the other hand, requires UHV and a cryogenic environment, typically around 4 Kelvin!!! Superconductivity and Ultracold atoms with BECs are two different fields in physics. The goal of our experiment is to combine both! The Paris group was the first one to achieve a BEC in a cryogenic environment but their goals are different to ours. We are aiming at forming a Hyrbrid Quantum System where we do quantum computation on one quantum system (superconducting quantum bits) from a 4Kelving fridge and store the quantum memory in an ultracold atomic system, a BEC which another quantum system.

The main technical hurdle is to produce a BEC in a cryogenic environment because you need to produce your ultracold atoms in a different environment and bring it with whatever means possible into a cryogenic environment! This is extremely difficult!! However, we are working very very hard and maybe close to doing it. We have some competition from Germany and USA but since have similar goals as us which is a Quantum memory but they are still far from us in terms of experimental progress. We have a working setup and hopefully, will soon get a BEC. If we succeed, I think me and my group colleagues will be running around the Insitute shouting, "BEC! BEC! BEC! BEC! BEC!" And then we can begin experiments towards a quantum memory.

That's what I'm working on so far after 8 months into my PhD.

Pila man ang ma abot nga temperature aning ultracold TS? Maka abot ni ug 0 degrees Kelvin or below pa jud ani? Since temperature and pressure are interrelated, does this mean nga possible ta maka reach ug total vaccuum?

You can't go below 0 Kelvin. Zero Kelvin is already the absolute temperature where all atomic motion freezes out. But ultracold atoms in these experiments that I've shown can down to nanoKelvin even picoKelvin in some experiments. The goal here is not to make pure vacuum. Where is the fun in that? But, instead, to create the 5th state of matter which is a BEC. BEC - What is it and where did the idea come from? Bose

If you are really interested, you can read about what the field is all about from the links I posted. It's really very interesting. So interesting that there are this much of labs in the world. Atom traps worldwide
