we're following the gregorian calendar and not the lunar one.. it dates back when pope gregory change the calendar years and added 365 days to the lunar days as the moon back then would not sometimes be visible over the polar caps.. Eversince, the gregorian roman calendar is the one being roughly adapted in the christian world...

they just want to make it easier to track.. the better calendar is the luni-solar which obviously no one bothers.
