This is really a disaster. Those who are accountable should start the clean up efforts and explain the consequences of the oil spill. Then, we could file charges for the negligence they have done. Our environment is at stake.

The government has been sending experts in the field to the residents in the area to explain to them the consequences of the spill. Reassurances were also made that they will not be taken for granted by this administration.

The government has released P20 million from its calamity fund. They're reportedly working on alternative livelihood programs for the people there as it would take a long time to rehabilitate the area.

Am just waiting for our gov't to come out and admit their ineptness and humbly ask for help from other more knowledgeable countries like Japan, the United States or any other European countries who are more experienced in disasters like this.
We should be realistic. The important thing is to conduct the cleanup with dispatch, and I don't think the government has been backward in asking for help from the international community.

There will be time enough later for fingerpointing. Right now teamwork and unity should be the rule in the cleaup and rehabilitation efforts.

Oil sheen sighted off northern Cebu town

CEBU CITY -- The surface waters off Madridejos town in Bantayan Island in northern Cebu turned oily Thursday, raising fears that the massive oil spill in Guimaras has already reached and contaminated the Visayan seas.

Both Madridejos Mayor Lety Mancio and environmental lawyer Antonio Oposa confirmed an oil sheen that turned the seawaters off Madridejos into greasy-like liquid that glints in sunlight.

Mancio said the oily surface waters could even be spotted just 300 meters away from the shoreline of Barangay Poblacion.

Local fishermen also found bits and pieces of hardened black materials, which Mancio described as similar to dried asphalt, in a fish sanctuary known as Kapayas shoal, some three or four kilometers from the town's shoreline.

Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz asked Petron to adopt measures to prevent the oil spill from spreading to the nearby Visayan Sea and Bantayan Island and other threatened areas.

He said he has directed the Philippine Coast Guard to help contain the oil spill.

"Petron has reiterated that it will expend all the efforts and funds to speed up the clean-up and to protect the threatened shorelines in the area and Task Force Guimaras is calling on Petron to continue to speed up the clean-up operations," said Cruz, also head of the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

To prevent the oil spill from spreading further to northern Cebu, Oposa said they will mobilize fishing boat owners and fishermen to block the Apitong pass, a narrow strait that divides Negros Island and Iloilo.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Petron as well the concerned government agencies are again slow to react like the evacuation of OFWs in Lebanon. Petron majority owned by the government pa naman.

Patay tayo dito pag umabot na sa Visayan sea yung langis.

I hop not. Lets hope it was just the oil of a passing vessel.
