I think the key here is for octal you can only count as high as 7 before going back to 0. Its just like the decimal system but instead of multiples 10 for every decimal place, it will be multiples 8 for every place on the octal number system. example in decimal: 7+2 = 9 whereas on octal 7+2 = 11.
in decimal
7+2 = 9 (since you can only add another decimal place with on the ones place has exceeded 9)
in octal
7+2 = 11(a new octal place is added since the ones place has exceed 7 and in octal you can only count to as high as 7).
Again i dont know if im making sense to you.
