Blood transfusions or medicines that cure diseases are THERAPEUTIC. They cure or directly prevent a bad medical condition. They are medically necessary.

Artificial birth control, on the other hand is ELECTIVE. It is NOT medically necessary to cure or directly prevent any disease (pregnancy is not a disease and pregnancy-related complications are mostly caused by poor access to proper medical facilities). It is just as elective as facelifts, liposuction, self-mutilation, etc. No medical or health practitioner should be forced to provide these if they are against his or her conscience.

The pro-RH people here are trying to obfuscate this very important distinction.

In other countries, doctors have rhe right to refuse to perform or provide such elective procedures if they have moral objections to them. The RH/Abortion bill will remove that basic right to freedom of conscience.

Large population may boost economic growth, says BSP
But raising purchasing power is crucial

MANILA, Philippines—A large population can be a blessing to the Philippines if this is harnessed to drive up domestic demand, especially at a time when emerging economies assume greater role in world economic recovery, according to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr..

“This can be an advantage if the purchasing power of the population can be improved,” Tetangco said in an interview over the weekend.

The size of a population is also an indicator of potential demand considering that the bigger the population, the higher potential demand there is, the BSP chief explained.

Citing data from the Asian Development Bank’s 2010 Key Indicators report, Tetangco said the middle class – defined as those with consumption expenses of between $2 and $20 daily at the value of money 2005 – has grown from about a fifth of the total Asian population in 1990 to more than half or 56 percent in 2008.

The ADB estimates that in 2008, the middle class had a spending capacity of $3.3 trillion, an increase of almost five times from the $721 billion in 1990.

“This purchasing power potential represents a powerful force for future growth,” Tetangco said.

He said this was a key consideration at a time when the disparate levels of development around the world are poised to normalize, as emerging Asian economies are growing stronger than developed ones.

To harness Asia’s strong growth as well as the rise of the Asian middle class, Tetangco said it is important for governments – particularly monetary authorities – to adopt longer-term policies towards strengthening domestic investment and consumption as well as exports.

He said that the exports sector continues to be a dynamic force in Asian economies given that, for many small economies, the domestic consumption base is limited and growth prospects are moderate.

Even then, Tetangco said domestic demand should be developed as a “second engine for growth” in order to promote broad-based, sustained growth.

“For growth to be sustainable and productive for future generations, consideration should be given to the environment-friendly policies and actions,” he added.

this is a good read.. thanx for the article.. but i have to say that this is wrong and will lead to economic disaster..

    my arguments:
1.) its only good if there is a large income-generating population.. we are talking almost zero unemployment here.. which of course would mean that almost all our workers are skilled and are atleast regular employees (as opposed to contractual like construction laborers)

2.) we are a consumer economy... basically, ang madato ra dire kay kadto ra namaligya sa ila goods.. while ang mga tao trabahante lang.. this will make the rich richer and the poor poorer.. we are the txt-capital of the world, one of the largest internet users in asia... kinsa man nadato ana? ang ordinary pinoy? no.. ang globe and smart ra jud...

3.) mao ng pobre ta because we always think of "buy"..

4.) he is taling bout markets in the other countries, which happened to be producer/manufaturer countries... and may i add that its from those countries we get our imported goods.. the more we spend, the more they get rich

this BSP guy was talking bout domestic consumption! and buying power.. he urges us to buy...

“For growth to be sustainable and productive for future generations, consideration should be given to the environment-friendly policies and actions,” - he should define by what he meant by sustainable and productive growth.. i doubt he is saying that it is ok ra manganak anytime..

this BSP guy is no businessman.. he knows banking but he doesnt know the forces behind the money that goes into the bank.. this guy should resign..

RH bill? it is never lawfull, even for the gravest reasons, to do evil that good may come out of it. the bill disrespect poor people, and focuses primarily on providing services to curb the number of children of the poor, while doing little to remedy thier situation.
