Speed is blues 4x - 20x faster. Also, I've always had this principle that no matter how fast you play, if you don't have soul enough in your playing, then you're not "there" yet, IMO. Speed isn't everything in guitar playing and it is not the epitome of being a guitarist -- this is what I've learned in my years of playing. That's why I admire those players who start slow first then learn to how to speed up than those players who start fast and can't slow down at the right moment.

The guitar showdown in the movie Crossroads was kinda crazy because it wasn't blues that defeated Steve Vai. The piece Ralph Macchio played was a CLASSICAL piece. With the addition of the overdriven guitar sound, then voila, you have a neo-classical piece. So in the movie, it was just like Malmsteen/Impelliterri who stepped in for that moment to claim the glory of the guitar showdown.

Any bluesman can go head to head with a metal-meister at any given Sunday. It's just a matter of how you express that single note nga maka bugto ug panty or gisi ug brip.

Tangtanga ang newbie xD That isn't objective enough. Nakaapil ko sa beginner's guitar class for fun sa una xD Lingaw kaayo but, that's what I mean, anyone can call themselves a newbie.

I think it should be categorized according to genre.

    Acoustic
Punk (Real punk not that garbage classified as punk now)
    Alternative
    Classical
    Neo-Classic
    Heavy Metal
    Black Metal
    Funk
    Progressive
    So on and so forth

Though these can be simplified into
    Metal
    Acoustic
    Blues
    Funk
    Punk
    Hard Rock
    Rock n' Roll
If the organizer of this event had more time in planning, it would have gone to that direction with lesser genres than what you have suggested of course. With only 8 finalists and the limited time, he was not able to come up with such a plan.

The following is the organizer's plan on how the finals would go. I have nothing to do with the program. The event is gonna be divided in to 3 Rounds.

1st round - each contestant is going to play his backing/jam track. From here, the judges are to pick 4 guitarists to advance to round 2.

2nd round - The 4 finalists are to jam to a single backing/jam track. Here, the judges can see how they can do improv.

Contrary to the initial belief, the guitarists for round 2 will NOT jam to GLASGOW KISS. Even if this was the organizer's plan, I would disagree with him kay dili tanan tao naka sepra anang kantaha.

3rd round - the final 2 will jam head to head and would still, do improv. I still have yet to clarify with the organizer on how this would go. Naa ba ni backing track or wala. Personally, mas nindot ang wala'y backing track and see how they'd go about without accompaniment.

Tentative judges for the finals are:

    - Dave Gonzales
    - Josh Peñalosa
    - Jaan Quijano
    - Barry Visoc

I-finalize sad daw tonight if Friday ba or Saturday ang finals.

    See you guys there.
