Joker gives PNoy high marks, fails close aides
MANILA, Philippines - One of President Benigno Aquino's critics in the Senate gave him high marks for his first 100 days in office, while taking a swipe at the shortcomings of the people working for him.
Sen. Joker Arroyo, a member of the minority group, praised Mr. Aquino for being able to maintain the people's confidence in him despite the early setbacks in his administration, like the failed handling of the August 23 hostage crisis in Manila.
"That is the test of leadership, when you're able to maintain the faith of the people in you," Arroyo told reporters.
He said this is remarkable considering the lackluster performance of some officials of the Aquino administration.
Without naming names, he criticized the people closest to President Aquino as his biggest burden.
"His ministers have not done any good. They're inadequate and their performance is short of desirable," said Arroyo, who was the executive secretary of the late former President Corazon Aquino, Mr. Aquino's mother.
Arroyo previously said that the Aquino administration was being run like a student council.
Arroyo also cited the President's assumption of full responsibility for the botched hostage rescue, a move that, he said, did not cause Mr. Aquino any damage and was even welcomed by the public.
Arroyo, however, refused to give the President any specific grade or rating.
"No matter how we rate him, the fact is, the public has confidence in him," he said. "How can we go against that?"
