CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia showed her support for chicharon makers in Cebu by eating the delicacy in front of the media yesterday.
Chicharon was served at the Provincial Capitol, a day after Garcia criticized Provincial Board (PB) Member Arleigh Sitoy for sponsoring a resolution telling the public to consume chicharon with caution.
The resolution said a warning label should be printed on the packaging material of the delicacy and should indicate advice against the health hazards associated with excessive consumption of food high in fat and cholesterol.
“Very good, let me feel my heart, it is beating for chicharon because it is beating for the livelihood of thousands and thousands of people that work for the chicharon industry,” Garcia said after taking a bite. She invited everyone to eat chicharon.
Garcia continued to criticize Sitoy, saying she considers the PB member’s resolution a manifestation of “hunger and thirst for publicity.”
She said if the PB will approve Sitoy’s resolution, she will veto it.
Sun.Star Cebu tried but failed to get Sitoy’s comment.
Sitoy, in his resolution, cited Republic Act 7394, otherwise known as the Consumer Protection Act, which states the right to health, obtain accurate health-related education and information on the nature, quality and quantity of the contents of consumer products.
Garcia, who said Carcar officials expressed their alarm and disappointment over the resolution, compared Sitoy’s resolution with the ordinance banning lingam authored by her ally, PB Member Agnes Magpale.
The stories on the two resolutions were separately headlined in two local dailies yesterday.
Garcia said she congratulates Magpale for "having taken the cudgels in this most
important piece of legislation."
She added that Magpale’s ordinance does not only protect the dignity of women but also protects the image of Cebu as well.
She added that Magpale's ordinance is "truly timely, necessary and can only benefit
the general welfare of Cebu and its constituents."
"We indeed have and I believe that we have very good, hardworking PB members who are serious in their job and do not file resolutions for the sake of filing or perhaps for the sake of publicity," she added.
