The 5 R method should be taken one step at a time. First, try step one. If that didn't solve it, move on to step two and so on. Since the steps involved in the 5 Rs are an overview of various problems not all will apply to your particular difficulty.
There are two things you must do before you even begin the 5 R's. The lowest level of diagnostics is to simply recharge your iPod. Ensure that your iPod is fully charged and the hold switch isn't toggled to the hold position. Both of these steps can save you lots of frustration. Even if the hold switch looks like it is in the ON position, you should slide it to the hold position and then back again. This ensures that it's not stuck in the hold position, which happens on occasion.
The Five R's:

Retry
Restart
Reinstall
Restore
Reset
The reset procedure is covered in greater detail on our iPod Reset [iPod Reset] page. You should learn how to perform an iPod reset as it is your first defense against any problems that occur. The reset is the equivalent to a reboot of your computer.
Retry
Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port. This would apply to problems where the difficulty is related to a connection to the computer, e.g. a mounting problem. Some USB ports won't have enough power to run the iPod and, if it doesn't have enough juice to run itself, it could appear completely dead. Use the highest power USB port available to you. Don't rely on a USB hub or FireWire chain, both can supply questionable power sources to your iPod.
Restart
Again, this is like rebooting your computer. Ensure that you have the latest software updates installed to run your iPod. This applies to the iPod software, USB or any third- party iPod software you might be using.
Reinstall
Uninstall then reinstall the latest version of iTunes or any other iPod software you're using. Get the latest version of the iPod updater.
Restore
Read the step-by-step guide to the iPod Restore operation [iPod Restore]. This step shouldn't be taken lightly and should be reserved for the worst-case scenarios with your iPod. This will erase all files from your iPod, including music, contacts, calendars and any other files you might be storing. It'll also restore the iPod to its factory settings. The restore will reload the software. This function is the equivalent of reloading the operating system on a PC. Once the restore is complete, you can synch again with iTunes to restore the files back onto your iPod.
