An alleged plot to assassinate President Aquino cropped up yesterday emanating from a conversation between Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and his good friend Mayor Vicente Emano of Cagayan de Oro City last Tuesday.
Department of National Defense (DND) spokesman Eduardo Batac confirmed the conversation between Gazmin and Emano but stressed that there is nothing “concrete” about the alleged plot which cropped up amid the growing jueteng controversy which has dragged several personalities identified with Aquino.
“There is nothing concrete about the plot; there is no specific threat but only possibilities,” said Batac.
The DND spokesman described the talk between Gazmin and Emano was a “candid and private one between close friends.”
“He (Gazmin) could be taken out of context,” said Batac, as he claimed the defense chief was also speaking as a former Presidential Security Group (PSG) chief of Aquino’s [COLOR=#000000 ! important][COLOR=#000000 ! important]mother[/color][/color], the late President Cory Aquino.
Batac, however, admitted that President Aquino could always be a target of such threat.
In a report by Bombo Radyo Cagayan de Oro, Emano claimed to have been surprised with the admission of Gazmin about an assassination plot against Aquino, who is presently on a seven-day working visit to the United States.
“Ako’y nagulat sa sinabi niya sa akin na mayroong plano na patayin si President Aquino at ang nakakatawa ay tinukoy niya si dating Mayor Aldong Parojinog na sa aking pagkakaalam ay hindi ito kayang gawin,” Emano told Bombo Radyo in the vernacular.
Parojinog is the former mayor of Ozamis City and was the alleged founder of the Kuratong Baleleng private armed group.
It was noted, however, that the alleged assassination plot cropped up amid the jueteng controversy now hounding several personalities closely identified with the President.
Among them is his second cousin and biggest campaign contributor businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco.
Aside from Cojuangco, also dragged in the jueteng issue is the Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Rico Puno.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III has again surprised the media and some people who recognized him in New York as he satisfied his craving for American hot dogs on a busy street at the Big Apple.

Instead of dining for lunch at a classy restaurant, President Aquino walked across the corner of West 45th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan and approached a hot dog street vendor.

The President first ordered hot dog sandwiches for his entourage, including the media, before munching on his own order of a plain hot dog sandwich with ketchup.

President Aquino has said that one of the experiences he is looking forward to in his first official trip to the United States are New York hot dogs.

During the lunch out, the President said he just wanted to experience how ordinary people eat in New York.

The President's hot dog sandwich and soda and the other orders for his entourage and the media amounted to only $54, which is equivalent to more than P2,000.

While the President and his entourage were enjoying their hot dogs, the Secret Service men, meanwhile, were having a security nightmare.

The area picked by the President was very crowded.

Civilians walking around the area naturally became curious as they noticed a group of men in suits and ties eating hot dogs and surrounded by cameras and media people.

The President, however, felt that he was safe with the Secret Service men, especially because one of his security details had guarded his late mother, former President Cory Aquino, during her official visit to the US.

According to Ging Reyes, chief of ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, the President and reporters were able to talk at length after lunch.

“He said he is really going to weigh things and study the recommendations regarding [Department of Interior and Local Government] Undersecretary Rico Puno. It seems like all indications point to he's going to go slow on this matter. He believes in due process and he said that he will not just go by one recommendation or one allegation,” Reyes reported to ANC’s "Dateline Philippines" on Thursday.

How irresponsible for a president! What gall to demand so much from the Secret Service when he himself could not even be bothered about a bus of foreigners being taken hostage in his country!

If he wanted hotdogs so much, he could have asked some aides to order and bring the food where they could consume it in a less public place, where they would not need extra attention from the security people. Pasikat na pod si abnoy. Very inconsiderate and arrogant, yet Filipinos would take it as his "humility".

And there's the real tragedy: that 15 million Filipinos would still fall for this stupid publicity stunt, hook, line & sinker.
