Mombasa and Kisumu might as well be on different continents. Kisumu is right on the edge of Lake Victoria--it makes for a dramatic view when the plane circles for a landing. One gets a really good view of the lake, the city on the edge of the lake, and the mountains in the distance. Kisumu is the gateway to Western Kenya and the tea and sugarcane plantations that dot the landscape as well as villages and towns in and around Western Kenya. On the other hand, Mombasa is more tourist-oriented, more busy and decidedly hectic compared to Kisumu. The contributions from different cultures are evident here: the food, architecture, and enteretainment are definitely eclectic.

Approaching Kisumu (not visible) but a pretty good view of Lake Victoria (well, part of it)

This is partly true. Kenya does have deserts, but it also has in every conceivable altitude ranges including grassland, lowland forest, bush and scrub, lakes and mudflats. The Great Rift Valley runs north and south through the country and basically separates Western Kenya from Central Kenya where Nairobi is located. Much of the farmlands are in and around Western Kenya. There are some farms in and around Nairobi, and then near the coast. The national parks are located in Western, Central and coastal Kenya, usually near lakes that support wildlife. The rest of the country is dry, very dry, hence it does not support agriculture.

A few images taken during a bus trip in southern Kenya, enroute to the Nairobi-Tanzania border.
