Default Mosque at Ground Zero -- a slap in the face to the American people?

I don't know if y'all heard this yet but I really love to know people's view on this. I find it a facinating debate I hope it catches a little steam here.

A plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero - sacred ground for many Americans - is being met with outrage.

At issue: a 19th-century building and whether it can be designated a landmark. If it is designated a landmark, the original building will remain. If not, American Muslim groups will tear it down and move ahead with plans to build an inter-faith community center and mosque.

Both sides continue to go head-to-head on the issue. Their most recent face-off: a passionate three-hour hearing held by New York’s Landmarks Preservation Commission last night. Those opposing the mosque dominated the hearing.

"It would be a terrible mistake to destroy a 154-year-old building in order to build a monument to terrorism," one woman said.

"We feel that it is a cemetery and sacred ground and the dead should be honored," Pamela Geller, a conservative blogger, said on CNN’s American Morning. "To build a 13-story mega mosque on the cemetery, on the site of the largest attack in American history, I think, is incredibly insensitive."

On the other side- some Muslim community leaders say the mosque could provide an opportunity for improving interfaith relations. "We're saying Muslims have a legitimate role to play in the social fabric of this country," said Ibrahim Ramey, the director of the Human and Civil Rights Division of the Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, on CNN's "American Morning.”

"I'm ashamed to be an American today," said Rakif Gathwari, a Muslim-American, who reminded the crowd that people from many countries and religions died on September 11.

    I'm outraged by it...
the day a synagogue/church can be built on mecca...
is the day they can build a mosque at ground zero...

    Wrong places for comparison, dude!

Mecca is a purely Muslim city. NY is a MULTI-CULTURAL city. Try a religiously biased multi-cultural country for comparison. You know, like maybe THE PHILIPPINES? :P

    For me, I say NO!

Unfortunately, the Muslims just won the vote to build the CORDOBA HOUSE (Mosque), but I bet the place will be a victim of hooliganism, vandalism, and etc. Believe it!!! That's one reason I say no.

Second, what the hell are they thinking? I know that America is about freedom, but across Ground ZERO?!?!? Seriously?!?!?! Ground ZERO is a sacred ground for the families of the victims during 9/11 and they know who were responsible for the attacks and now they're building a MOSQUE?!?!?!?! This is like building a KKK Chapter House across to an African-American Baptist Church. Ok, would that be acceptable for Muslims though, across the CORDOBA HOUSE, the US Goverment will build an Army recruitment centre and put a picture of Bin Laden with a bullseye in the front window?!?! Hmmm...

What a fag, coolnezz makes an excellent point. "A religiously biased multicultural country" ROFLcopter what the hell are you trying to say? I have some choice words for you but you ought to make a definition of what "a religiously biased multicultural country" is first LOLOLOL. I bet it's something dumb.

Mosques have been built on territories muslims have conquered signifying victory. Often times these same mosques where built on former churches, temples and synagogues. Adding insult to injury they chose to name the mosque the "Cordoba" House amawa aning mga muslima.

wadapak......... terrorism at your doorstep........ no offense to good muslims.......F to the bad muslims.....extremists....

a good one would be a mosque in front of a church.... that should take care of this line:

could provide an opportunity for improving interfaith relations.

PMed you for a fight? LOL I never do that and we can even have the mods prove it. Never pmed you and never will.

So your "religiously biased multicultural country" is a definition based on research or something you came up with to sound intelligent? I think the latter.

Catholic churches doing the same? LOL name one church built on a structure originally a Mosque. As for former churches, temples, and synagogues now being mosques I can name a few. Someone needs to do more research.

I never said catholic churches build over mosques. *basa tarong mr. intelligent* But Catholic churches build over ANY old church. maskin basa paka da vinci code bai naa pa na gimention or even the sources for those points in the book. Roman churches were formerly pagan churches.

next time bai taronga us sabot ang ako gipost ha? habitual na nimo na di ka mosabot ug post not just here but EVERYWHERE in istorya.

The point here is angal lang mo na naai mosque sa ground zero because of 9/11? Mao ra na?! Whatever happened to the so-called "objective" opinions "intelligent" people like you claim?

To cut through all your BS bai you simply don't like me (and I relish that thought). LOL

Is the philippines not multicultural? And yet who dominates? Catholics diba? Our society decides things based on conservative reasoning of christianity. Masayop ang muslim sayop. Ang christian sayop pwede sakto? Correct? That's religious bias!
