An undersea tunnel will be constructed from Cebu City to Lapu-Lapu City to ease traffic congestion resulting from the growing economic activity in the two areas.
Rep. Rachel Marguerite Del Mar (1st District, Cebu City) said the 500-meter undersea tunnel will connect Cebu City to the Municipality of Cordova in Lapu-Lapu City.
The undersea tunnel will link the city of Cebu to the province's other cities and municipalities at the same time ease the flow of traffic and keep with the demands of local and foreign trade, commerce and tourism, according to Del Mar.
"This project may appear ambitious but this is the solution to the traffic situation in the city," del Mar said.
Del Mar said the expansion of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the increase in domestic and international flights to the province have resulted in huge traffic volume.
"There is the imperative need for additional access routes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to downtown area and the southern cities and municipalities of the province," Del Mar said.
Del Mar has filed House Bill 192 providing for the construction of the additional access routes and appropriating funds for the said purpose.
Del Mar said the full economic development of Cebu City and Cebu's municipalities has become a matter of national concern.
"Because of this, necessary complementary infrastructure facilities must be in place and in top shape. And any infrastructure strategy must consider the expanded and accelerated economic growth of the area," Del Mar said.
"The traffic movement across the existing Mandaue City to Lapu-Lapu City roads and bridges shall exceed its accommodation capacity in the coming days," Del Mar added.
Del Mar said the expansion of the bridges is simply not feasible and a third bridge between Cebu City and Lapu-Lapu City will not likewise be feasible because it will hamper the entry of international sea carriers into the port of Cebu City.
