buy whatever you can afford... but invest more on glass

in my experience a digital camera would last about 2~3 years average
before it starts breaking down and you wind up buying a new one anyway

but you'll find your lenses lasting you a long time

which lens then? start with whatever comes with your camera

I know several pros who come out with great work with just the
humble 18-55 kit. here are some shots I've taken with the canon kit...

but once you've pushed the limits of it then will you have a better
idea of what to look for next. whether it would be a lens with a longer
reach, bigger opening, or closer focusing distance than what you
    currently have

by the way... my first dSLR was a canon 300D

@choui168: hahaha...1D MarkIII! grawrrrrrrr! hehehe...how nice if ill have enough money to buy that one. huhuhu...i think no matter how much d cam cause we cant deny that it still depends on who took shot. but having higher model is much more better if u just know how to use it.

@abortretryfail: wow! very nice sir. nice lighting, nice a55. hahahhaa...perfect. taken with 300D kit lens? WOW!

    agree with ARF.

as they say "invest on glass" that's the main thing. My friend in flickr uses 20d, but his shots were astonishing...

now im still stuck with my 20d and 350d, these cameras still gives me what I want....to take photos.

wow! so does it mean that no matter much the cost/model of the camera, the important thing is the lenses ur using and the way to shot it?

the truth of the matter is shoot with what you have... you don't need the next best thing

glass is important... true... but it shouldn't be the reason your photography is better
you can have the best lens in the world and still take lousy shots

the most important thing is your ability to shoot well... no matter what your holding

so start with what you have or, if you're still buying, what you can afford
when your equipment starts limiting you... that's when you move on

another shot with the canon 18-55 kit lens on a 300D...

    what am I using now? canon 40D with a sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5
why? my 300D shutter button no longer works and my kit lens fell and broke
