You know with all these videos Apple put up on their website to show other phones having issues with the antenna as well (not just theirs), I'm wondering if their next TV ad campaign would be like an 'iPhone vs. Android' ad (replacing the old 'Mac vs. PC').

...the new ad would probably look something like this...

    iPhone: "Hello I'm an iPhone."

Android: " and hello I'm an Android."

Android: "So iPhone, I heard two iPhones got married over the weekend. The ceremony was great, but the RECEPTION was awful.

iPhone: "Hahahaha very funny Android. But why you ask? Didn't you come to the party? I sent you an invitation didn't I?"

Android: "You sent the invitation to Android 2.1. I'm a 1.6. My phone and carrier don't support me yet.

iPhone: "Ohh the whole FRAGMENTATION thing. That's too bad [looks at the camera and smiles].

Should you buy the iPhone 4?

That’s the big question ahead of the much-anticipated release of Apple’s latest iPhone incarnation in Singapore this Friday.

SingTel, StarHub, and M1 all have their pre-orders going, anticipating the overwhelming response the last two iPhone models created.

One thing’s for sure — the iPhone doesn’t come cheap. A 16GB model will cost while the 32G version will set you back .

But in recent weeks, major issues surround the device’s antenna and signal strength have sparked huge concerns for consumers.

Here’s what’s been happening. Not long after the iPhone 4’s launch in the US, early customers began to realize that their phone’s signal strength dropped dramatically when held in a certain way. That’s because Apple chose to use the device’s metal outer casing as the antenna thus causing severe drops in signal strength and even dropped calls when certain areas near the bottom were covered.

Apple responded immediately with a software update claiming that “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong… We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula.”

But this update did little to solve the problem. “Antenna-gate” soon became too huge to ignore, prompting CEO Steve Jobs to hold a press conference where he promised to give out free cases that would prevent users from blocking the antenna.

Apple even went so far as to “prove” that other smartphones are equally susceptible to the “death grip” on their website, a move that quickly turned into a public relations disaster when Blackberry and Nokia criticised the Cupertino-based tech giant for dragging their names through the proverbial mud.

Now consumers in Singapore still have time to consider these issues before the iPhone 4 arrives and here are some points to focus on:

    1. What do experts say?
Consumer watchdog Consumer Reports has made it official that after vigorous testing, they cannot recommend the iPhone 4. They tested three separate iPhone 4s in controlled environments and even tested against doubts about AT&T’s network in the US. On their blog they go as far as to conclude: “If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3GS.”

    2. What do local forums say?
Discussions on well-known local tech forum, are mostly optimistic with mentions such as “it might be a US problem. No news about this from Japan or even UK”.

A member said: “Throughout this whole antenna fiasco, I’ve always had the feeling that it is the service provider’s issue. Sure, the hardware design shouldn’t have exposed the antenna like that, causing our fingers to bridge the gaps. However, given a good enough signal, this problem doesn’t seem to arise at all.”

Yet another said: “IMO, buying a bumper is a small price to pay for a great phone. The antenna problem may be disappointing at first, but it has never crossed my mind to give up on the iPhone 4 because of it.”

    3. What a faithful local Apple customer says?
I spoke with David Chin, a director at PR firm Hill & Knowlton and a long-time Apple user.

His opinion is: “While I think they did make a boo-boo in the antenna’s positioning… I don’t think it makes the product unusable. Heck, I even get dropped calls on my Nokia e-71. I don’t think it’s a big issue. If you asked me, I think some of the iPhones with a really bad death grip are likely lemons. I don’t think it’s a problem with all iPhone 4s.”

    4. What questions are unanswered?
There still remains no official word if customers outside of the US will be getting the free bumper case promised by Jobs. There’s also been no word from Apple on recalls, changes in upcoming versions, and other solutions to fix this problem.

As much as I’m keen on getting it, I have my doubts. Knowing the issues, would you get one?

i won't.. if someone will give it to me for free, i'll sell it to some apple fanboy who don't mind even if it only works as an ipod touch, grab myself a nexus one or desire, and still have money for myself.
