Int'l group dismayed over 2nd media attack under Aquino
An international media watchdog group expressed its dismay over the latest attack on a media person, the second under the Aquino administration.
Miguel Belen, a reporter for radio dwEB in Nabua, Camarines Sur in Bicol, was seriously injured in a shooting incident on his way home to Iriga City on Friday.
Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontieres/RSF) said the attack on Belen shows the urgent need for President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy" Aquino III to “combat the prevailing impunity for those who attack and kill journalists."
In a statement on its website, RSF said "this latest case of post-electoral violence against a journalist highlights the failure of the authorities to guarantee the safety of media personnel."
RSF says Justice Secretary Leila de Lima’s plan to form a body to combat violence against journalists is encouraging but “the results, and the results alone, will determine whether it is an
appropriate response."
Initial investigation showed that two men on a motorcycle fired at least four shots at Belen, who is in serious condition and under police protection.
RSF calls the incident a “post-electoral violence" noting that Belen, 48, participated in the campaign of a local politician who won a seat in the House of Representatives in the May 2010
elections.
Police said Belen was allegedly threatened by rivals during the campaign and the shooting could have been "politically-motivated."
RSF says Belen is the fourth journalist to be the target of a serious attack in the past 30 days. The three other victims were all shot dead: Desidario Camangyan of radio Sunshine FM on June 14; and Joselito Agustin of DZJC Aksyon Radyo on June 15; Nestor Bedolido of Kastigador on June 19.
A retired journalist in Kalinga province, Jose Daguio, 75, an anchor-reporter of DZRK-Radyo ng Bayan, was shot to death on July 3. He was the first media person to be killed under the Aquino administration. –VVP, GMANews.TV

Big deal kaau ang mga media oi!
naa pay daghan nangamatay ngano media man gyud naa importansya?
guys, we all know that with great power comes great responsibility. though it does not mean that if someone gets murdered in new work city, Spiderman gets to be blamed, somehow, it is within his powers to prevent that murder from happening.
the same is true with the Presidency. Noynoy is not the one who pulled the trigger, but with the vast powers that the Presidency has, it is within his capability to curb the media and activist killings, if not, then at least solve most of it.
inaction on the part of the Presidency gives out the wrong signal that it is OK to kill mediamen and activists. not taking a strong and vociferous stand against the matter sends out a message saying that the administration does not care about free speech and disregards voices of dissent. this is a grave scenario if this comes to be.
you might ask why is this a serious issue?
though imperfect, the media serves as a vanguard for the welfare of the society, exposing and thereby countering any efforts by any group or individual to unfairly take advantage of any other group or individual's wellbeing. despite the fact that there exists vested interests on those that control the media, it still serves its purpose as the venue wherein grievances can be made public. it places the spotlight on certain atrocities that would otherwise be given less attention to.
the same is true with activist and sectoral organizations. they voice out the concerns of their respective sectors, most of which have been marginalized due to the unequal power distribution in the halls of Congress.
without the critics from the basic sectors and without the public venue to voice out these concerns, granted that there already exists an imbalance on how power is wielded, we will most definitely head back into the dark ages of despotism and dictatorship.
