    S.Korea to beef up readiness

SEOUL - SOUTH Korea's new army chief of staff vowed on Friday to strengthen readiness to deal with any possible North Korean provocations amid heightened tensions after the deadly sinking of a warship Seoul and Washington blamed on Pyongyang.

South Korea has asked the UN Security Council to censure Pyongyang over the sinking. North Korea denies it was responsible and has warned any moves to punish it at the UN would lead to armed conflict and possibly nuclear war.

South Korea and the US have urged Pyongyang to avoid provocations and vowed to hold the regime accountable for the March sinking of the warship Cheonan that killed 46 South Korean sailors.

'Our military is charged with a supreme task to maintain high readiness to sternly counter any North Korean provocations,' Gen Hwang Eui Don said in his inauguration speech at military headquarters in Daejeon, south of Seoul.

He said he will ensure any provocations can be dealt with when they occur. On Thursday, he cautioned there is still a 'considerable' possibility of provocation by the North given its history of attacks on the South, though he said North Korea has so far shown no signs of any unusual military activity.

He assumed the top army post following a recent reshuffle of four top officers amid criticisms that the military was negligent ahead of the sinking and mishandled it. -- AP

north has numbers of troops due to conscription while south depend on volunteer which is not regular.... even if nokors is old school they have nuclear capability... and it is a big chance that china will join if US will intervene again.... nokor was defeated during korean war until the chinese push macarthurs men back...

US cant go head to head with china... they cant risked another world war... beside US armed forces resources is streach too thin.... in iraq and stan!!!, if they ever want to join... pulling all their troop out in iraq and stan and put them here in asia... basin they could head2head with china...

both nokor and sokor have aim to reunite korea into one, the only problem is who will lead?, Lee Myung-bak?, Kim Il-sung?...

what happen their is a classic example of Communism vs Capitalism

either way... North and South is still OFFICIALLY at war since the signing of armistice treaty of 1954..... thou they agree to stop hostilities on the 38th parallel DMZ...

"south depend on volunteer which is not regular"

South Korean males must serve 22 months in the Military. Just a little FYI.

The last thing China wants are millions of refugees from North Korea streaming into their borders. The PRC wants to preserve the status quo. Notice that they aren't making any solid statements on the issue.

During the Korean War, things were different, so saying the PRC will come to NoKor's aid is based on nothing but assumptions. Mao was still around, and he didn't bat an eye when thousands of his men, including his own son, were killed on the front lines.

and after it they go back to a civillian, similar to our reservist and rotc, so its volunterism opr you can also call it required 22 Months service, but doesnt make then regular but reserve, a regular is someone who will serve the force until they are at their retirable age... FYI!
