MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos will lose if Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III wins the elections, a rival of the lawmaker said Friday.
In an interview before he spoke at a campaign rally in Marikina City Thursday night, Senator Richard Gordon said Aquino "will be co-opted totally. He cannot even answer simple questions."
The Bagumbayan standard-bearer said he would like to ask Aquino two questions: "Have you ever taken drugs? Have you undergone psychiatric treatment or consultation?"
He said these were "material questions" and that voters were allowed to ask these questions to candidates seeking their votes.
Gordon said he was not engaging in negative campaigning and "was just doing my job to inform the public of the important issues to talk about."
He said he was not afraid of losing, adding that he can always go back to doing full-time volunteer work for the Philippine Red Cross.
But Gordon said that he decided to run for the country's highest post to provide people a choice and enlighten them about the many things that have gone wrong in the country.
"Why did I run? So I can say all these. We have a sick society and yet nobody cares," he said.
Gordon sued survey companies whose results showed him a far fifth and Aquino the consistent frontrunner.
He said his fight against the survey firms has helped reveal the truth that Aquino's relative and allies were behind the survey groups, an allegation also aired by senatorial candidate Francisco "Kit" Tatad, but denied by Aquino's camp.
Gordon said surveys created a bandwagon effect, influencing voters to back candidates based on popularity.
Gordon has been ranking low in the presidential surveys conducted by SWS and Pulse Asia. The survey leaders are invariably Aquino, Senator Manny Villar and former president Joseph Estrada.
In his speeches, Gordon said the Aquino and Cojuangco families have occupied almost all possible elective posts in the country, from president to congressman, but the families' home province Tarlac remained the same.
He had also questioned why the Aquinos, despite occupying various seats of power, have not pinpointed the brains in the assassination of Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

kahit sino puwedeng sabihin na "this is a sick country and yet nobody cares." well, tama naman si Gordon dito, ang dami nang baho ang lumabas sa gobyerno, and still wala ni isa ang nagkaroon ng malinaw na sagot kung bakit merong mga nangangamoy sa gobyerno, na obviously, lantad na lantad na sa masa, and yet itinatago pa ito... anyways, maging makasaysayan man o hindi ang eleksiyon ngayon dito sa pinas, meron pa ring magrereklamo na "NADAYA AKO", kahit sa isip lang....
