Default Hydrogen Sulfide: Baby Steps to Immortality?

Mark Roth studies suspended animation: the art of shutting down life processes and then starting them up again. It's wild stuff, but it's not science fiction. Induced by careful use of an otherwise toxic gas, suspended animation can potentially help trauma and heart attack victims survive long enough to be treated.

What's new? Only that Phase I of human trials have been done, and that they're proceeding to Phase II as of 2010. A human being is a lot more complex than a fish.

I don't know if you're trying to deliberately downplay the impact of developments such as this one by your remark, but just to give you an idea how landmark this is, it doesn't only have applications in the area of prolonging life expectancy, but also, in instances of severe trauma (i.e. accidents, injuries, drowning), a person's life can be saved because the brain will hopefully not die of oxygen starvation, while the victim is being transported from the accident site to the hospital ER.

And if you really wanted to go into issues of immortality, if you are truly of a scientific bent, you can imagine the implications of this towards research--some researches take more than a lifetime (i.e. some scientists die well before they discovered what they were aiming for, due to human lifespan)--with suspended animation, researchers can keep prolonging their lives so that they can continue with their scientific research. This is most especially true for people involved in astrophysics (i.e. they can now live long enough to actually observe celestial events that take thousands of years or more to occur), and of course, goes without saying...the potential impact for manned space travel.

while humans will always search for the elixer of life, the truth is this will only cause further destruction. earth becomes overpopulated due to immortality and this will lead to resource grabbing and worldwide conflict.

anyway, nature will always find a way to retain balance.

Science is always a double edged sword.
