@ puffy: the best advise i cud give you is learn the fundamentals, the ins and outs of XHTML and CSS. And learn PHP from ground up not just jump directly into learning Joomla and Drupal..once you get the grasp of PHP thats the time you jump into CMS types....my point? sooner or later you will grow big, client will demand more from you and perhaps built customized apps for them...if you were only into DRUPAL and Joomla then thats a big prob....

trust me, i have seen and interviewed a lot of peeps around only to learn that they are just good with CMS, let alone would just copy/edit themes from the internet and claim it as their own.

you only need to know the basic of web design. in PS learn how to use the tools and what are they use for. in CSS, learn the basics too and how to layout a site using simple and clean markups. this is essential when you get on CMS, then venture on CMS customisation and design integration. XHTMML/CSS foundation is a good start

It really depends on preference. I have seen people quitting school just to do self-study and focus on what's needed to be learned. And some goes on spending and enrolling to schools and learn... Whatever your preference is people really don't care if how you got it, because in the end it's not process that is important but the very scale of how vast your knowledge and skill has grown.

There are more than one way in eating a mango... so to speak. ^______^

@neugent: Bai thanks sa advice, know I should learn the basics and I'm a newbie in this website area. But I don't want to go somewhere (in this field). I'm just doing this for fun.

So, CMS works for me. but I guess someone who really wants to be a website designer then they should learn the basics...

school and experience really big difference.
im a project manager myself; in getting web developers and web designers; i NEVER look at the educational background. what i always say is show me your portfolio or samples of works; thats when i get my interest when i see their works.

whats the difference? even though sauna employee or nag trabaho pa ko under a company(i dont own); naa mga applicants nga nindot ug mga background, daghan sad OJT comp sci; the fact is most of the designers naa didto sauna kay pareho ming wala'y degree in computer science or any computer related course. layo ang among mga field. even wala mga short term course. experience and self study ra gyud.

i agree with that about CMS. fundamentals first of the CMS you want to master. like if its Joomla! go php, mysql, css, html, xhtml, js, ajax.

though this had brought us projects from clients that first went into companies that have people who dont know the ins-and-outs of the CMS. they always end up(their site) being a garbage; who they turn to in the end are the well founded with the skills involved with the CMS.

oh well; maayo sad gani hinay hinay balik ang economiya. ning abot gyud nga duha ka buwan wala new projects ning abot namo. pfft

Pero I was more like a visual learner than a reader... Duka-on pud ka daun cgeg tan-aw ug texts... So if you're like me, you should invest in Lynda.com video trainings. Dali ra kaau ka makat-on, in just few days. Pero that's not it. You need to invest on Adobe Creative Suite. If kahibaw naka mo practice sa mga tools, dali nalang para nimo. First, you need to learn how to design Web 2.0 sites in Photoshop. Then the slice tool. Then Import your design either in Dreamweaver or Fireworks.

To learn how to code, akong adto-on before kai css-tricks.com by Chris Coyier. Diri jud ka mostly makat-on... Then ayaw ug rely sa mga desktop applications ra... You need to really know how to handcode hardcore. Download Notepad++.

I strongly recommend that we should learn hard-coding first and then take advantage on the drag-and-drop tools, free apps and plug-ins.
