Default Apartment blaze kills four people

CEBU, Philippines - Four people died when a fire gutted a 15-door apartment complex along Don Pedro Rodriguez Street, Capitol Site, Cebu City at dawn yesterday.

Fire Officer 3 Antonio Gonzales said that the victims could have possibly suffocated causing them to lose consciousness, which is why they were not able to go out of their apartment.

The victims were identified as Rolando Caberte, 63, a retired manager of Philippine Air Lines; his daughter Maria Charmaine Caberte, 35, a call center agent; her 15-year-old son, Miguel Paolo Caberte; and the family’s helper, Alma de la Torre, 25, a native of Canlaon, Negros Occidental.

Maria Charmaine was reportedly four months pregnant.

De la Torre, on the other hand, was supposed to tie the knot next month, said her sister Mary Joy.

Gonzales pegged the damage at P3.25 million.

He said they are still conducting a thorough investigation as to what caused the fire.

The survivors could not also point out what took place when the fire started.

He said they will also include in their investigation the allegations of Concepcion Bartido, a stay-out laundrywoman of the Cabertes, that she smelled a burnt electric wire at the apartment two days before the incident.

The fire investigator said though that based on the account of one Virgie Dagle, one of the occupants, the fire originated at room C that was rented by the victims.

another useless death due to faulty electric installations .. when will the local govt become serious in imposing the right building code and inspect old edifices? It will save a lot of lives .. Also, I see that our building units and homes have toilets with small windows? These will always mean death traps for those panicking people, thinking that the restrooms are their salvation .. in Europe, I noticed that even in toilets, there are big windows... we can do the same here in the Cebu and in the Philippines .. after all, there are always blinds to parry the peeping toms, if ever.

Actually bro, sila ang first tenants when it was first built. We used to live in Door 1A for 13 yrs, sa atubangan. Kaila mi ana nila. It's a tragedy dyud. Dili pud practical karon bro nga mamalit ug balay with the financial crisis.

Barato ra man ang mga houses karon? It's like renting. Pila man diay rent ninyo diha? Ako nagbayad ko pag-ibig 5,800 per month for my genesis house. Sa una naka rent mi 7,500 pesos per month for an OLD, OLD, House with NO maintenance pa! Whereas diri genesis or any townhouses nga mga development, cement ang mga gamit so pwera buyag dili prone sa sunog!

Good for you, you can afford,,,how about others intawn nga nag prioritize sa pagkaon, education and comfortable living conditions lang,,,,,and,,,, even if they can afford to buy, if you were at their shoes and you just come here in Cebu to study (student) or work assignment, would you buy a house or rent an apartment/house, when after all, you know that your stay here in Cebu is temporary only?

FYI, I study and lived here in Cebu for the past 38 yrs. already. My husband and I bought some properties and have a stable business here. After the graduation of my eldest daughter in Medical school, I enrolled her at FEU for her review sa board exam. 6months yon ha.

One of our plan was to buy a condo.but I objected because its only temporary, that's why my husband and I decided that we would rent an apartment near the school for my daughter than staying in a dormitory and will just go to Manila every now and then to check on her status.

Naka tipid mi than staying all the time in a hotel. After passing the Board exam. she packed up her things and come home to Cebu to exercise her profession.

Our family personally knew the Cabertes, they always participated in Passus at Ayala Center, the annual Holy Week presentation of Angel Society of Cebu Foundation.

Sun Star AS USUAL is trying to sensationalize the story by saying that Charmaine was 4 months pregnant when IN FACT SHE WAS NOT.

BTW, we have different priorities in life and a house was not their priority and that does not make them at fault.
