Another thing I'd like to talk about is the magnitude of the particular old habit....... Blessing our elderly isn't much ado....

What if the niece of the oppressive Aunt was a member of an outreach community? What if more people need her help than a god who seeks 150 repetitions of prayer?

And also about the Italian Father who won't let her daughter marry the Polish boy. What if love is to be found nowhere else for the Italian daughter?

I agree, the passage you posted complements the idea of free will. And of course it jives with my train of thought, and some of the things that I wanted to be implicit in my initial post here.

Freedom without rules is anarchy but rules without freedom is tyranny........ I don't want this thead to be a debate, but I hope more you guys will advocate free will. So long as it doesn't cross boundaries. Free will from religiosity. Free will from cultural traditions, that when we put ourselves out of the box can be considered frivolous. The freedom to CHOOSE....

Do you think families can sometimes go too far in oppressing their children for the sake of tradition and at the expense of free will to choose?

There are some.. especially families that have been following tradition passed down to them by generations. Unfortunately with each passing decade most of this practices no longer validates. But some are still worth it to practice. Like what iron_golem said, the practice of "amin" to our elders is a tradition worth saving. For in it we show that we value and respect our elders.

I like that quote gwyn, it's very true. Unfortunately, some parents think that they own the thoughts and mind of their children. Parent should be there to guide not to dominate.

I agree, but in light of the magnitude of the old habits and traditions on my mind are nothing like that mode of greeting, which can be done with little ado.

Unfortunately, some parents think that they own the thoughts and mind of their children. Parent should be there to guide not to dominate.

I agree, especially those who are willing to recite a plethora of chants and repetitions to a god or goddess, (and excuse this act as "meditating") surely they should understand that The Holy One would NOT have forfeit the free will of His children...

yeah i think i understand what you have in mind. My aunt as a girl was punished, kneeling on a floor with salt just because she did not go to church.

plethoras of chants?? very true .. free will was His gift to us. We should practice it with care not suppress. But unfortunately, some just take it for granted and trample on it. It's a sad thing really...

Hehe, well I guess I wouldn't... I'm NOT the girl with the tyrranical Aunt who was told to watch over her after what might have happened to her parents (the girl is a friend of my friend), but I'm definitely someone who has undergone oppression..... - and sometimes still going through it...

So pardon me if some of my posts sound like ranting instead of sharing.
