I really don't know why its called the dark side but I found what ken rockwell said about it really interesting. apparently, back in the 80's nikon was the preferred choice for pros because of lens compatibility. Canon had just introduced their EOS line and old lenses cannot be used anymore.
but, sometime in the 90's, sports shooters complained that Nikon's AF wasn't fast enough for their needs and they all switched to Canon (whose AF system improved a lot by then) thereby, banishing Nikon to the "dark side".
