quoted from humper....health is a basic requirement for a breeding animal but pet quality dogs?= meaning they have disqualifying faults as per breed standard dictates, could be bred (afterall they can produce, literally coz of its functional reproductive organ),but ethically...they should not be.coz, fyi the only reason for breeding dogs is to improve a breed or line that comes up with a healthy & functional animal/s.basically,u cant improve on 'pet quality' dogs coz they already have flaws that could be hereditary in nature...unless ur only in it for profit (hope not)
is it to say that pet quality dogs should not be bred even if it does not have a genetic defect? allthough it would still be relative on the definition of pet quality.. as what the video has shown, breeding dogs to improve a breed does not always produce healthy dogs. Primarily, breeding should be for functionality which is sometimes contrary to breeding show dogs . Are the breed standards we are adhering to formulated according to beauty or functionality.

A BIG YES!!!coz health is not the only reason for breeding dogs,we have to include functional conformation, etc.that is why we have dogs that are show quality/breedable dogs and pet quality/un-breedable dogs coz they are meant to be that way.the purpose of showing dogs is that it act as a breeding evaluation for dogs with functional & flawless conformation and health..think of it,if show dogs cannot completely produce good dogs..how much more the pet quality ones?i do understand all of ur sentiments in breeding pets,as most of us feel that it is the best animal in the world...our pet.di lang nato unta ibreed coz if we breed it then what we are doing is-SENTIMENTAL BREEDING which most pet owners are doing,as most of them commit what we call 'KENNEL BLINDNESS' among the animals it owned.in that we cannot improve the breed of our fancy.most reputable breeders safeguard against this by stating it in their contract, and if u buy a pet quality animal it has a spay/neuter agreement.afterall,u just bought this dog to be just a PET,so why dare breed it...to get some of ur money back?to provide an income to pay for ur bills, its food, vaccinations, etc?well,if thats the case ur not really a doglover instead a puppy peddler,it a selfish way to breed dogs,i pity those are victimized by this way of selling pups. (daghan ana dri).
i've seen the video,in fact i commented on that also.FYI,the standard they based their breedings,in that vid is the english standard/KCGB standard and with the border collie, its the AKC standard (which is newly revised way back i think,2001).for the most part i frown upon this standards,as these standards do not protect the integrity of most working breeds, instead,it provides a blueprint for the construction of mere SHOWDOGS.we at our club follow the FCI standards(the standard of the country of origin of a certain breed),as these standards include health screening & functionality tests for certain breeds like the rottweiler to undergone before it could be entered into a conformation competition.making a complete balance of form & function.
with regards to health issues like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, panosteitis, etc.,the only thing we should do to eradicate these problems is thru testing, which unfortunately is not available in our country yet.health clearances of tested dogs appear in the papers of screened dogs such as OFA,CERF,PENNHIP,etc.those that do not passed these tests,no matter how flawless it is,are subjected for neutering, and live the life of a family pet.how i wish we will have it here so as to better the life of all dogs & owners in general, para di nata mag depend cge sa imported dogs that are screened abroad.supposed the tests mentioned surfaced already in our islands, the BIG question is......would all so called 'breeders' participate?as this tests are not that cheap & certainly would frown the faces of business men(in dog breeder's clothing) who makes its money selling pups just to everyone who inquires about his/her pups thru the 'famous internet site for PETS'![]()
If dogs that do not conform to some standards set by these governing bodies would be relagated to as pets and therefore could not be bred, then working line gsd could not be bred. But as it is, these group of dogs are more functional than their show counterparts.
bai, dont dare question the value of the standards, specially the fci standards coz it has been there loooong before u knw dogs or knew that there is a 'working line' gsd.these blueprints are created by PROVEN experts to act as a guide to especially working dog breeders.are you new to dogs?coz the way u ask questions,it seems like u dont knw the value of the standards or if u do,u only knew akc standards?u dare breed dogs but u dont have a blueprint?then whats ur guide, just a simple pairing with working line to working line?or the sport like mondio ring, knpv, french ring, agility, etc?y do u breed that pair, what traits or attributes do u want ur pups to come up with?is it the drives,is it the agility, etc?or u breed based on ur own 'ideal' standards?if u adore the traits of working dogs...then its written all over the fci standard u just have to broaden ur thoughts.have u read the fci standard and come to a point in ur life were u fully understand it....completely?coz the way i see it,u dont completely understand what 'pet qualty means.by that i ment, dogs with undershot bites, overshot bites, etc.which will have a hindrance for them to function properly or in some cases create physiological problems in their bodily functions.for example,u have an undershot working GSD will u care to breed it?just bcos it has a 'working line' written all over it,doesnt mean its breedable/functional/better than any proven standards (or ur standard),etc.ok,since ur dogs are working line, what 'work' do you work ur dogs with?im also a working dog enthusiast, same as you,as i adore a functional dog more than anything.breeders should be open minded and always 'look before they make a leap' and back their program with thorough evaluation and not based it on heresays or video propagandas in the net, that's created by people who knew nothing beyond what they hear or saw or are to sentimental to accept the fact that the pets they love so much, wonderful as they may seem, should not come near a whelping box![]()
pwede ba ang calcium for us(humans) muy isupplement sa dogs nato(pitbull)??
humper,
just following the flow of the discussion. Its nice to exchange ideas and opinions . It is not very helpful if one becomes too personal and start some baseless accusations.
