For us Catholics, purgatory is part of the doctrine "Communion of Saints". We profess that always in our creed that's why you should be able to understand it. The Church is divided into Church Militant, Church Suffering and Church Triumphant

The Saints compose the Church Triumphant while the souls in purgatory are the Church Suffering. Christians here on earth are part of the Church Militant because in holy war against our earthly desires and to work for our salvation.

The Saints can not pray for themselves because they are already enjoying the Beatific Vision. What they do is offer prayers for the other two. The Souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves but can ask for prayers, sacrifices, indulgences from the Triumphant and Militant. As part of the Church Militant we can always seek the intercession of the saints to guide us and help us. We are also obliged to pray for the souls in purgatory for after all we want all souls to be in communion with our Creator.

You might not know that the souls asking for you to pray are dearest to you that's why pray that their stay in purgatory would be lessen.

I understand tubeOfdeath if it sounds scary for you but definitely there's a great borderline between ghosts and the souls in purgatory. If it really sounds scary for you, you may consider them as relatives from far places which need your letters so that they won't feel lonely. I've just read an article regarding purgatory and I knew then that it is our obligation. If you're a Catholic you always profess it in "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints ..." in our creed.

If one day, you shall be taken and fell short in purgatory, would you not seek the prayers of those living for your own salvation?
