    Let's repeat:
    1) The Bible is not a scientific reference book.
(True! I agree with this, in fact I also said it, and they also said it)

    2) The Bible contains scientific principles.
(False! Unfortunately, they will not agree.)

So how can the Bible be not a scientific reference book, and yet still contain scientific principles? Contradicting logic.. out of context.. syntax error, invalid command..

Cheers na lng.. as much as I enjoy this, I'll have to retire for now.. play-time is over..

wrong again john, we can use any words provided nga logical lang ang iyang context and definitions. and in cases like arguments and debates dapat mosobay ka sa context.

    1) correct

    2) it depends on the context

So how can the Bible be not a scientific reference book, and yet still contain scientific principles? because it is not a scientific book and yet it contains scientific principles. there is no contradiction.

did Galileo do such same thing consulting the Bible? heck no..

If the Bible contained such scientific principles, then those bigots you mentioned before would have understood them already and not resort to torture threats or Inquisition.. but because of scientific principles born out of rigorous study and formulations, people today cannot anymore resort to those Inquisitive behavior (which by the way they also derive from the Bible)..

and FYI, I am from the sciences.. although I'm not pursuing a medicine major, I am taking pre-med courses and go with the same classes with pre-med majors. and I'm not taking introductory pre-med majors.. I'm just clarifying where the Bible is.. and again, it DOES NOT contain scientific principles..

the Bible contains very accurate descriptions that describe the effects of the newer cutting edge Scientific theories of our time? that is based on speculation.. because of your own interpretation utilizing OTHER SOURCES of information, you are able to interpret the Bible in that way.. you may say it is accurate, but to others it is not.. which is why the Bible is prone to many interpretations..

you can go on preaching such, but it is not backed up with any empirical data.. which is why the Bible DOES NOT contain any scientific principles..

I wonder what kind of consultation you give to the Philippine Agricultural Agency in Surigao City.. do you tell them, "just read it in the Bible and you'll get the scientific principles from there"??

see how ridiculous that claim is.. no offense intended..
No offense taken, your points are well taken. I believe you have stated your point of view and stayed on topic. You attack only the message and not the messenger. And you are gracious enough to be willing to agree to disagree. I personally believe every man has the right to their own beliefs and opinions. Good post, excellent poster, and enjoyed the exchange.

Actually the Bible is useful in Horticulture. The Old Testament is very specific on how fruit trees are to be treated in the first 5 years of production, and if followed will produce a healthier tree that will have consistently higher crop yields. The dietary laws help to choose proper plant diversity types that allow for a healthier diet. And the sanitary laws are well known to be helpful. Even the Government uses it to stock pile the nations seed supplies for bad crop production years. Remember farming is much older than any religious writing. Horticulturist are not smug, we will use any information source that is helpful for better crop production.

The local officials and engineers are trying to convert the farms to use more organics. To use as an example to show other areas that it can be done. I am helping to revolutionize the farming communities by helping them produce higher farm yields and healthier food crops. It is rewarding to work with those that are trying to improve the environment for the better good of the locals and future generations. They are trying to stop the heavy artificial chemical usage presently being used. It is poisoning the people, wildlife, land, and the environment. The runoff is decimating the coral beds, natural mangroves, which is effecting the natural breading and fish nursery ares. It is rewarding work.

bluedes does not believe that scientific principles are found in the Bible or religious text. That is his right, we may not agree with him, but it is his right. He may not know that the Bible's old Testament and parts of the Qur'an are based on many of the same sources. That during the time of the Dark Ages in Europe the Islamic world in the middle east was flourishing in the fields of science, medicine, agriculture, architecture, astronomy, and mathematics. They were strict followers of the Qur'an and it's teachings and looked at the text for answers. Words like algebra, alkali, alcohol, astrolabe, naphtha, and zircon are all English words derived from Arabic and Persian words that hearken back to 700-1150 A.D.

You as a practicing Muslim know how strictly things are to be challenged by that which is written in Qur'an, and the Islamic belief to look at the text for guidance in all things.
    Muhammad said, "
Faith in God Means Leaving Superstitions Behind!"

I remember that when someone makes the claim that religion is the belief of those bound only by superstitions. To truly believe in God releases you from the superstitions that make other fall short. Faith is not superstition, rather it is enlightenment from the chaos that chokes and binds mankind's mind. We both believe in the GOD of Abraham, we just choose different paths to reach him.

I will never tell anyone that you sided with Christians, because I know you have a reputation to uphold. We will say you only stated what was a clear personal observation..

In Leviticus 19:23-25, we see God’s commands pertaining to “all manner of trees for food.” For the first three years from the time of planting, the tree is to be considered “uncircumcised” (i.e., too young) and the fruit left un-harvested. During the fourth year (vs. 24), the fruit is considered holy. In ancient Israel, it was harvested and given to the priests and Levites as an offering for their own use. In modern times, this same concept can be accomplished by giving that year’s harvest to the ministry, or by sending in the wholesale value as an offering.
From the fifth year onwards (vs. 25), less tithes and offerings, “shall you eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof.”

Fruit trees were, after all, created by God—He knows what is best for them and us. The Bible is God’s “instruction manual” for mankind. If we are obedient to God and respectful to His creation, we can expect His blessings on our crops.

Leviticus chapter 11 and Deuteronomy 14:1-21 gives us a list of good and bad food (meats, fish, and insects)

Fruits, Berries, Grapes. Numbers 13:23, II Samuel 16:1-2. Grapes were the first thing Noah planted after the flood. Grapes were eaten fresh, dried and eaten as raisins just as we do today, and pressed into cakes. However, most of the crop of the vineyards was made into juice, wine and vinegar. A cup of raw grapes contains only 58 calories, 0.3 grams of fat, zero cholesterol and vitamins A, B and C. Grapes also contain important minerals such as boron, calcium, potassium and zinc.

Legumes. 2 Samuel 17:28-29, Genesis 25:34. As reported in the book of Samuel, beans were among the highly nutritious foods sent to feed King David's hungry army and restore their strength for the hard times ahead. Beans have a lot of soluble fiber, which helps lower LDL and reduce blood pressure. The fiber also helps keep blood sugar levels stable, stave off hunger, and even reduce the insulin requirements of people suffering from diabetes. Beans are a great source of protein as well as being packed full of vitamin C, iron and dietary fiber. Beans help lower blood pressure and reduce the "bad" cholesterol that today's research has shown to be the cause of so much devastating heart trouble --- a rarity centuries ago. Beans contain chemicals that inhibit the growth of cancer. They help prevent constipation, can stop hemorrhoids and other bowel-related problems from developing, and help cure them if they do.

Nuts, including almonds, pistachio nuts and walnuts. Song of Solomon 6:11, Gen. 43:11. Botanists today believe that Solomon's "garden of nuts" referred to in Scripture was a rich grove of walnut trees. At the time, walnuts were prized for the oil they produced, which was regarded as only slightly inferior to olive oil. The fact that walnuts were a delicious treat and highly nutritious was an added bonus. Nuts contain the right mixtures of natural ingredients whose benefits include cancer prevention, a lower risk of heart disease and help for diabetics. The oil found in walnuts is considered helpful because it is one of the "good guy" polyunsaturated fats and tends to lower blood cholesterol levels. Note: it's best to avoid roasted nuts since they have been found to carry carcinogens, which could lead to cancer growth, so buy your nuts raw.

Onions. Numbers 11:5. Like its cousin, garlic, the onion is noted as a cure-all. And the folk healers hold it in high regard as far back as 6000 years or more. At least 3000 years before the birth of Christ, onions were treasured both as food and for their therapeutic value --- particularly in the treatment of kidney and bladder problems.

Wheat. Jeremiah 41:8, Ezekiel 4:9. Wheat was the "staff of life." Biblical people ate their grain boiled and parched, soaked and roasted, and even ate it green from the stalk. It was pounded, dried or crushed to be baked into casseroles, porridges, soups, parched grain salads and desserts. Ezekiel's bread was intended to be a survival food during the dark days of the Babylonion conquest because it contained wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt. Wheat bran is high in insoluble fiber. The fiber protects us against constipation. It helps prevent intestinal infections, hemorrhoids and varicose veins. It also improves bowel function and guards us against colon cancer. It also is idea for animal feed and can increase health in farm animals. The crop is ideal for crop rotation which help farmers to grow productive crops in rice patty areas to help add new nutrients to the soil which help minimize the use of commercial fertilizers, and later higher crop yields.

Barley. Deuteronomy 8:8, Ezekiel 4:9. Barley's high fiber content can help keep us regular, relieve constipation and ward off a wide variety of digestive problems. It also may help block cancer. Barley is full of beta glucans, a type of fiber that can lower the risk of heart disease by reducing the levels of artery-clogging LDL. It is another great crop for animal feed, and suites well for crop rotation practices.

Coriander (Cilantro). When the children of Israel wandered in the desert and received manna from the sky, they described it as looking like coriander seed. Since then coriander has been called "the healer from heaven." Coriander is recommended for indigestion, flatulence (excessive gas) and diarrhea. Externally, it's used to ease muscle and joint pain. Recently, scientists began looking at coriander as an anti-inflammatory treatment for arthritis. Other research has demonstrated that it reduces blood sugar levels, an indication that it may prove to be a useful sugar management tool for diabetics.

Garlic. One of the world's oldest healing foods. By the time of Moses, garlic was already being used as an anticoagulant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent, as well as a relief for flatulence, a diuretic, a sedative, a poultice and as a cure for internal parasites. Research suggests that garlic may help protect against heart disease and stroke by lowering blood pressure. It contains allylic sulfides, which may neutralize carcinogens. In fact, garlic has been linked to lower rates of stomach cancer, too. It is heart-friendly, with scores of studies showing its astonishing ability to fight hypertension, prevent blood clots and lower cholesterol.

Theses are just a few examples that can easily grow in small home gardens and large field crops. Combines with healthy "Clean" meats/ fish and minimizing "Unclean" meats/ fish, rice, potatoes, green leaf vegetables there can be a more nutritious diet for the locals and their children. This also can help make farms more productive. 94 million Pinoys will be 120 million by 2040. The Philippines can remain strong if it can produce enough food crops, meats, and fish for it's population and still have excess for strong exports. only 30 years there will be over a 30% increase of the population. Filipino's are the 14th largest ethnic group on this planet. Second largest Asian group in the USA.

    you're funny james.

anyway, i have to hand it to you.. referencing all those Bible verses.. yeah, they do contain ideas and perhaps your source of inspiration.. but scientific principles? and detailed analysis? where's the experimental data? empirical results and observations? was there even a standard unit of measurement?

you're a botanist, but you're using your bias for the Bible to claim that it contains scientific principles..

this is not about belief that the Bible or the Koran for that matter contains scientific principles..

    i'll just restate this:

the Bible contains very accurate descriptions that describe the effects of the newer cutting edge Scientific theories of our time? that is based on speculation.. because of your own interpretation utilizing OTHER SOURCES of information, you are able to interpret the Bible in that way.. you may say it is accurate, but to others it is not.. which is why the Bible is prone to many interpretations..

is it really that impossible to convince you guys that the Bible does not contain scientific principles?

lets talk about what science and the bible says about this

Banana growers urged to stop aerial spray

CATHOLIC bishops appealed to banana growers in Mindanao to stop using aerial spray in their operation, calling it an "immoral practice that infringes upon human health and dignity."

In a letter to Stephen Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA), Archbishop of Manila Gaudencio Rosales, Kalookan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, Bishop Bernardino Cortez, and Bishop Broderick Pabillo said that for many years now, families living in the surroundings of banana plantations have been complaining of getting sick, their crops dying and water resources contaminated because of aerial spraying.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

The chemicals sprayed from the airplanes that you use for your bananas indiscriminately expose the people and the environment to poison. International and local studies point to the hazards of aerial spraying of pesticides on humans and the ecosystems, the bishops said.

"We are one with all affected people in Mindanao in working for their deliverance from this immoral practice of aerial spraying that infringes upon human health and dignity. We cannot allow their suffering to go on any longer for anything that offends people, especially the least of our brothers and sisters, is an offense to God," the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said.

The bishops urged the banana growers to "value the dignity of life and the integrity of creation over and above corporate gains and profit targets."

"Your professed corporate social responsibility is being challenged now. We strongly suggest that you rise to the occasion as socially responsible corporate citizens and, on your own volition, halt aerial spraying for public health and social peace. As the ethic of reciprocity reminds us all, ‘do not do to others what you would not like to be done to you.’ Please heed this very valid, relevant and urgent concern of the poorest of the poor farmer communities who existed long before your plantations opened. Your heeding of our appeal will stop us from bringing to the attention of your international market the concerns of the poor farmers who have been victimized by your aerial spraying activities," the CBCP urged.

The bishops issued the letter in support to the farmers belonging to the Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (Maas), whose representatives are now in Manila asking Malacañang to issue an executive order banning the use of aerial spraying as an agricultural practice.

Maas is composed of farmers, indigenous peoples, youth, fisherfolk and former banana plantation workers who live within and around the plantations of Mindanao that are exposed to aerial spraying.
