Here's I how understood the film.

The film is about two unhappy people. One is a young woman. The other is an older man. Both are in relationships that they are not happy with. One shows signs of brilliance, but is unable to show it to the world because she is afraid. The other, knows he is brilliant, and probably was successful, but is now no longer able to show his brilliance because Hollywood has deemed him "passed his prime" and so he now has to resort to making wacky commercials in Japan.

When they meet, they realize that they are reflections of each other - to the girl, the older man is what she aspires to be: confident, successful, popular. To the older man, he sees the girl as what he once was - unpolished, full of potential, waiting to break out.

    Do they fall in love?

I don't know. I couldn't hear what Bill Murray was whispering to Scarlet Johannsen in the last scene.

Maybe it should just be between the two of them.

i'd bet they fell for each other... just look at the way they look at each other... those long break of silence just staring at each other the way they complement each other... they just couldn't freely express what they feel coz something's holding em back... could be age gap.. could be their spouses.

This is like a quieter, more subdued version of AMERICAN BEAUTY.

Parallel stories about mid-life crisis and coming of age.

I think what most people find "boring" about this film is its quiet and patient style, which is so unlike the conventional glossy, loud and forced-fed style found in most Hollywood romantic comedies. No close-ups, no zoom-ins no stupid so-called" witty" dialogue that no one in real life ever speaks.

The conversations are real, and so, like in real life, when listening to real people, they require patience and attention.
