    Excerpts from Sam Costanilla's January 5, 2009 online article about dropping out for entertainment

    SPOTLIGHTER Dina Layam of Aznar road e-mailed her thoughts regarding some high school students who quit school in favor of show business. She wrote that she has a neighbor, a 15-year-old student, who stopped going to school simply because of her passion in dancing. Dina added that the student and some of her friends, who are also dropouts, formed a cultural dance troupe. They hope to get hired by event organizers and two major television networks.

    * * *

    DINA added: “Pursuing one’s dream is good but in my honest opinion, doing it at the expense of education is not only wrong but also highly immoral and irresponsible. As for Cebuano showbiz, there is really no industry existing (the Visayan rock band scene is an exception). Shows featuring cultural dancing are not abundant and the take-home pay never reaches P1,000. Even dancing on local television attracts a non-existent audience.”

    * * *

    THIS writer agrees with Dina’s observation that with the poor health of Cebuano showbiz, it’s best for high school students to stay away from that “industry” and stay in school instead. She also asked them to be vigilant about dishonest talent agents and show organizers who will no doubt exploit their ignorance and weakness.

    At least one of Cebu's noted writers noticed the "quit school and go to showbiz" trend. Concerned citizens should speak out about it and report it to the media whenever possible.

    As for the people who joined the recent StarStruck screening in town, I wonder how many of them dropped out (or are planning to drop out soon).

    Meanwhile, President Obama's speech for America's students has been released online in text form.

    Incidentally, the organizing of these reality TV shows do in fact distract the youth from their priorities and the prospects of "instant" wealth, fame and comfort are factors here.

    As for StarStruck, you can be sure that there will be many rejects from the auditions, and the lucky few who could make it will be played like toys by the network executives. Remember those moments of "intrigue" on past StarStruck (or other talent search programs for that matter)? I believe they were scripted just for entertaining viewers (and the participants' emotions got played as well).

    There were Cebuanos who made it to certain levels at the last StarStruck. Since they dropped out of that season, what did they achieve afterwards?

    As for the so-called grand winners of the last StarStruck, how are they doing now?
    exactly.

    and i think its important to note that these TV networks are making a fool out of everybody who gets into the trap of reality tv and talent searches. not only the wannabes but also the people who are watching. these so called "contestants" appeal to the public by answering questions like "why do you think you should not be eliminated this week". they are practically begging for redemption... and then there goes the undying line "to vote, txt blah blah to 2366". talk about marketing strategy. can you imagine how much these networks are earning at the expense of people's naivety and fanaticism?

    and yes, where are they now? what happened to the so called winners from the earlier talent searches? most, if not all of them, are back in the rut after the limelight has faded. now if you quit school for an ill-fated pursuit, where do you think you're headed next? sure you can always go back to school if its not already too late. but then again, you're left to deal with the time wasted and the sad truth that you only get to have your 15 minutes of fame and all that will be left for you is the bitter taste in the mouth of being pas`se´.

    I just had a thought about GMA's effort in attracting the young to try out for StarStruck - the younger and less educated the applicants are, the easier it is for the network to play with them and exploit them in and out.

    To those of you students who dream about gaining instant wealth and fame through talent searches - your best option is to STAY IN SCHOOL AND FINISH.

    There is more to education than showbiz glitter.

    Do you know someone attending the StarStruck auditions this weekend? Show them this excerpt from Wikipedia

    Criticism
    When StarStruck's fourth season finished airing, a lot of TV review gurus and press people have pointed that the show has lost its excitement and "reality" factor since its second season. Popular tabloids also found StarStruck's "downsizing" from 30 to 60 minute episodes to 15 to 30 minute airing contributed to its dissolving popularity. Another prominent topic that Internet Bloggers and TV Critics cite is that the show's constant and sudden format changes tend to confuse viewers. Criticisms like these led to the show's current hiatus.

    It's a wonder what format and gimmicks GMA will use this time around.
