I'd say prayers can be very helpful.

Note: Im an atheist (I dont pray!) This is just an observation (of my past experiences as a theist and my present encounters with theists, etc.)

As I see it, its mostly a motivational thing (self-motivational or directed towards others). It seems to also allow someone to reflect on something really intently (reflect on his/her self, the situation at hand, etc.)

I would say freely-composed prayers would be more productive than the rosary, which I think is just too 'ritualistic'...Repeating the same worshiping prayers over and over again (in hopes to somehow induce a stronger invocation for 'divine intervention' maybe? to resolve the thought-of issues at hand...Yes, it could be motivational, but too restricting in my opinion...)

What I find sad is that people tend to rely in it too much though. <-- Theists would most probably disagree on this one.

It makes a good motivational tool for the believer...

    Just my two cents...

i'm not criticizing the rosary (at least i'm trying not to), but it's ironic to see how people would pray the rosary and of the 10 people praying the rosary together, only two or three people probably really mean what they're reciting. the other 7 or 8, are only reciting the Hail Mary's for the sake of doing it.

what is the purpose of praying if you don't find meaning on what you're praying?

That also why I think its too ritualistic. Whereas composed prayers tends to be really meant.

The rosary is just a tool or a means just like the beads used by the Buddhists to achieve enlightenment !

@TS: i really don't know your motives why create such a thread .. pero for me, kay katoliko man ko: for me both are the same and are effective ... ang tinud-anay nga pangamuyo sa santo rosaryo, tinuod sad nga pangamuyo nga gagikan sa kasingkasing ug dili lamang sa baba ..

may i ask an honest question? why do some drivers hang a rosary on the rear view mirror of their cars? or on the handle bars of their motorcycle? can the rosary keep you safe from accidents?
