I'd say prayers can be very helpful.

Note: Im an atheist (I dont pray!) This is just an observation (of my past experiences as a theist and my present encounters with theists, etc.)
As I see it, its mostly a motivational thing (self-motivational or directed towards others). It seems to also allow someone to reflect on something really intently (reflect on his/her self, the situation at hand, etc.)
I would say freely-composed prayers would be more productive than the rosary, which I think is just too 'ritualistic'...Repeating the same worshiping prayers over and over again (in hopes to somehow induce a stronger invocation for 'divine intervention' maybe? to resolve the thought-of issues at hand...Yes, it could be motivational, but too restricting in my opinion...)
What I find sad is that people tend to rely in it too much though. <-- Theists would most probably disagree on this one.
It makes a good motivational tool for the believer...
Just my two cents...
