Like most doomsday prediction, this one has to be taken with a grain of salt. But it's not without its merits.

About 100 years ago, the population of the Philippines was around 8 million. The population now is more than 80 million. Of course we cannot allow that to continue at the same pace. After 100 years, there will be 800 million people here?! Given the rapid population growth, it doesn't take lots of additional statistics on why we used to have more rice for export and we now have to import.

The 2nd point of the article says improve education. It's very easy to say, just not sure what to do with the overpopulated classrooms and the underfunded budget. By all means, we need to improve the educational standards though! No need to argue.

The 3rd point is something I don't agree though. So we have maids here... If there are higher paying jobs available and our unemployment rate is not pathetically high, then there will be fewer maids. You don't need to implement a "maid ban"... It's pathetic, but reality is maayo na lang mag maid kaysa kadtong naa sa bukid nga ang buhat mangaot ug camote ug mamopo ug saging... Kada adlaw mao ray maka-on, either camote or saging... Wa man sad lain opportunity para ila, unsa-on ta man...

Right now, we just have to move forward with what we have. Stop blaming ML Quezon. It's been so many years. Besides, you think the 300 million Americans are willing to help 90 million Filipinos? Tax burden lang sobra pa siguro gidoble ang anak sa kada American family. Naglisod man gani sila sa Iraq...

To the 1st two suggestions, there's a quote from George Bernard Shaw for the cynics:

    You see things and say 'Why?';
but I dream things that never were and I say 'Why not?'

The scary thing about this is I don't think it needs 100 more years before the effects will become unbearable if we don't improve. It can be as short as 12 years... it is in our lifetime. Also, after 100 years, the standard of living better improve. If it remains the same as today and our neighbors had 100 years of improvement, kaluoy tawon sa atong mga great grandchildren noh... Considered primitive people na diay sila by that time.

But this is already happening today. Our pols like Gloria jet around in First Class, wine and dine First Class and shop First Class all under the pretext that other more "advanced" countries would be aware nga kaya ra diay sa Pilipinas. In the meantime, here in Asia, nothing can hide the fact that we are among the most primitive societies in the region. When we have to compare ourselves with countries like North Korea or Burma to feel good about selves, then you know exactly where we are and what our richer neighbors think of us.

Here's what I think. If you had a neighbor who lived in a nipa hut with 20 children and the parents go out and spend all their money getting drunk and eating lechon while the kids starve and the nipa hut is on the verge of collapsing, that is exactly how our neighbors view us and our leaders. We are so pathetic that there are even people who really believe that there is such a thing as being too pessimistic about our situation. What misplaced arrogance. At least the truly arrogant are arrogant about something of substance. We are being arrogant about our own poverty. Unsa na kaha no kung dato gyud kaayo ang Pilipinas, hambugero na gyud siguro kaayo ta diri sa Asia, hawod na gyud siguro kaayo ta... but of course that is never going to happen so there is no need for us to worry about our leaders becoming even more hambugero =D

World population growth will stabilize at around 9 billion. No need to worry about "overpopulation". It is a myth, although some pro-RH types still have their heads buried in the sand and refuse to listen to the scientific evidence. Poverty is caused by massive corruption, bad governance, and economic mismanagement. Population growth has little to do with poverty.

our country may not be around (in the future) kay its islands will merge with other countries. kita mo atong theory gipresent sa Planet Earth tv series by BBC?

seriously, before we factor out each others solution, why don't we start disciplining ourselves and set a good example para sa next generations to come. positive thinking may help too.

karemember pamo atong infomercial sa TV sauna... sa mata ng bata, ang mali ay nagiging tama pag ito ay ginagawa ng mas nakakatanda? (hihihi, sori kung wrong grammar)

To my understanding , it is not right to compare NOKOR and BURMA to the Philippines just to make a point because these countries has their own flaws that we also dont know .

Again , I cant understand the comparison of the PARENTS of the 20 children who lived in a nipa hut to our LEADERS and that doesnt limit also to the ADMIN but reflects also to the OPPOSITION since both are our leaders . If you are trying to connect the dots regarding the expensive meal , do you think if they save it for the rainy days or instead gave food to the needy , will it change lives ? I dont think so bai .

We need to ponder sa biblical passage " GIVE THEM FISH and THEY WILL EAT for a DAY , TEACH THEM HOW to FISH and THEY WILL EAT FOR A LIFETIME " .

POVERTY is not solely caused by the GOVERNMENT but the ATTITUDES of every CITIZENS of the REPUBLIC of the PHILIPPINES . Balik sa scenario na arrogante na ginikanan , ngano man diay ug special ang pakals nila ? That is not the point there bai ... the issue is , kabalo man diay sila na PAYAG ra ilahang balay ngano mag cge man ug HIMO ug BATA ??

    Back to the topic :

I am more concern again dili sa issue sa status of the nation or the outcome of the system , governance , attitude etc but GLOBAL WARMING and that doesnt only affect the Philippines , afterall , it is GLOBAL so bisan by that time na SUPERPOWER NATION na ang Pinas as an example , LUBOG lang gihapon na LITERALLY . Karon gani , some MARIANAS ISLANDS are sinking inches every year tungod sa rise of water level .

Why not? We must always benchmark ourselves against other countries in the region to get an idea as to how well we are doing. Those countries don't merely have "flaws" they are total disasters -- failed states. We are on our way there, but not quite there yet. I do suggest you read up on North Korea and Burma, you do not want the Philippines to be like those countries and yet, we are not really that far off from them. We are on the precipice because a desperately poor country with weak institutions and no rule of law can easily slide into anarchy giving rise to a country that will be different from what we see today and more like NOKOR or BURMA.

Well you answered your own question. Nobody is espousing the mere handing out of the $20,000 to the poor of our country, because obviously we have too many and the money would be spread so thin as to be negligible. And I have to ask where exactly in my post I even implied doing that? But the $20,000 could have been used to build how many classrooms? And supply how many books? For all your saying and whatnot you seem not to understand that "teaching people how to fish" costs money, money which is being wasted.

The attitude of the citizens is influenced mostly by the attitude of the LEADERS. You will see this occur every single time across history and across many countries and cultures. That is why countries with principled leaders like Singapore (Lee Kwan Yew) have principled people and why countries with shameless losers as leaders like the Philippines have shameless losers for people. The word LEADER has as its basis LEAD. When you LEAD by example, others follow. With rampant corruption at all levels of government, it is safe to assume that they are merely following the example from the top.

I do not deny that our culture has many flaws, but it is not per se responsible for the widespread poverty of our country and to say so borders on racism and insensitivity towards your own fellow countrymen. Unsa man diay imong pag-tuo sa pinoy? Nga born to be losers ta? Of course not. We were born into this society where those who are supposed to lead, with principle and grace, instead abuse their power with cruelty and insensitivity. Hence, the society around us, a decrepit and collapsing husk of unprincipled attitudes and bahala-na mentality.

Global warming is an impending threat to all nations, but each nation individually has the responsibility to put into place laws, systems and policies to at least mitigate its effects as we all know that when it does occur, it cannot be stopped. But things like limiting our population, for example, putting in the infrastructure necessary to deal with flooding, etc are things that can mitigate the damage, hence to say matters of global importance cannot be dealt with at a local level is misinformed. The Philippines is not going to sink totally, because it is not on as low-lying a level as these other countries, but there will be impact to our food system, among other things.
