2nd week of using gasoline with Ethanol, nag bara na pud ang idle jet, gi choke ug na solved na pud. Nag ka duol ang ika 3rd week, every other day na mo bara then every day na hangtod karon nga naka 3rd week na. I checked the carburetor float bowl area and touch the aluminum components with cotton buds, some are clean and some area have corrosion. I touch the brass part kanang mga jets, naay itom ug di na sinaw ang mga itsura. Wa na nako makaya ug choke so I went to the shop this noon time open the carburetor for check-up.
This is very clear with the actual test nga dili compatible sa current materials sa carburetor ang naay 10% Ethanol. In fact less than 10% pa gani ni since pag refuel nako ug Petron with 10% ethanol ( Petron Extra Unleaded) 22 liters ra man to aron ma full tank to the brim then nakuhaan pud dayon after sige travel ug gitubilan nako ug 16liters Caltex E10 to the brim pud.
There are sites telling us nga 20% and above lang ang pwede mag sugod nga maka corrode when using ethanol but less that 10% already did some corrosion sa Nissan 1999 LEC carburetor. Ethanol is not compatible with soft metals such as zinc, brass, copper, lead, and aluminum.
here's one document about Ethanol compatibiliy: http://www.in.gov/idem/catalog/guidance/la-072-gg.pdf
here's another: Ondeo/Nalco fuel field manual - Google Books
and a google result where I took the above links:
ethanol copper compatibility - Hanapin sa Google
This is a serious issue for cars in the country using carburetors and materials with soft metals like copper, brass (copper and tin) and aluminum (intake manifold is aluminum on most cars). I did my own test and I like the results in terms of engine performance (I did change my ignition timing for even better results) and exhaust have less to no carbon deposits. But the materials in my carburetor is not compatible with the gasoline with 10% ethanol even though one site stated that Nissan 1995 and up are compatible (they must be referring to the fuel hoses and steel fuel lines and not taking into consideration the carburetor components or did not test it at all).
Caltex only recommend their E10 fuel for fuel injected engines and their attendant will tell you that when you refuel. Petron have no verbal warning and only put a small sticker that their Extra Unleaded has 10% Ethanol and maybe not everyone will bother to read it due to small text. Shell also put a similar sticker but I did not bother to read it for it's too tiny and I don't get fuel from Shell.
I only seen a set of fuel injectors and did not open it. If fuel injectors have aluminum, copper or brass component and even rubber inside, it's a sure thing it will also be affected by Ethanol, maybe only a longer period of time than my actual test. Toyota with carburetor can survive longer than my Nissan, Toyota have larger jet holes than my Nissan. These carburetor jets or fuel holes inside the carburetor housing are usually brass (copper and tin alloy).
After cleaning the corroded parts, we put back all the parts together and reinstall the carburetor. My problem is solved but I still have almost 1/4 tank of the same fuel in my tank today and some on the carburetor. Ako lang siguro ni ihurot to almost empty or sagolan ug Caltex Silver or Caltex Gold or pwede pud Petron XCS and even Petron Blaze. Ang problema ani kung maabot ang panahon tanang fuel with Ethanol na, we're already thinking of making a fuel additive that will help protect the soft metal components but that is still for testing soon.
For those using carburetors, If you guys want to find out the effect of these fuel to your carburetor components, please investigate it yourself. The corrosion we've seen today is instant and something in the fuel is slowly eating the metal components. It could be Ethanol or maybe some other ingredient added when they reformulated the fuel to have 10% Ethanol. The truth is out there for you to find out. This what we found out, and this is not to discourage everyone from using the new fuel blend, in fact I like my engine performance with it. However, I encourage that you also have to find out for yourself with your cars if you need to see the results first hand.
Other than fuel prices, kung sige 'ta ipiton ani, mapiga gyud atong utok ani mangita ug paagi aron makapadayon gihapon ug gamit sa atong cars. I hope naa pud uban nag hunahuna ug alternative nga pamaagi.
Sir Vernie,
OT gamay. I mixed my gasoline (XCS) with a denatured alcohol (flying tiger ang brand), is this thesame as using a gasoline with E10?
I've been using this for 3 months already and I use my car everyday. What I noticed before is that dirt was accumulated in my fuel filter. After replacing my fuel filter everything is ok.
Need your comment(s)/input(s).
Thank.
clarkjames
Mas maayo pa ning flying tiger, it's not the same sa Ethanol sa gasoline, I do mix it with my gasoline before testing the E10 and no problems with the carburetor for several months. However, mas maayo ang flying tiger kung up 2% lang ug nindot na kaayo ang combustion improvement ani bisan di pa ka mag change sa ignition timing. Lesser pud ang carbon particles sa exhaust. According to the website sa product nga flying tiger, 90% methanol daw na. Treasure Island - Featured Products
Bisan moingon pa sila nga sa 20% up ra nga Ethanol ang magsugod ug problema ang materials, di na ko motuo based on the test I conducted. We checked the carburetor before testing E10 ug sinaw ra.
how much diay ning E10? available paba ni?
Caltex Silver, Petron Extra Unleaded and Shell Unleaded all have 10% ethanol. Unfortunately, your carburetor with brass and aluminum parts will not last long without any corrosion when you use fuel with Ethanol.
EFI aku makina sir mitsu lancer 91. wala naman carb ni. pwede ni cya? asa nga caltex ang naa pa nga e10 ug how much diay?
btw, au natong aso sa sakyanan sir. top over haul kay worn out na valve seals ug piston rings. hehee
Sa Caltex Banilad ko nakakita ug Caltex E10 but I am not sure they still keep this fuel kay ang mga Caltex Silver with 10% ethanol na, basically same na sa Caltex E10 at Caltex Silver price.
Caltex does not recommend their fuel with ethanol for carburetors, only for fuel injected.
Less cars on the road, lesser air pollution. Sakto ba?
Usa na ko sa affected ating ethanol, ni corrode ang jets sa akong carburetor after testing fuel with ethanol. Now I am using Caltex Regular Gasoline, 81RON at P44/liter, mas nindot na nuon ug dagan. hehe I hope di ni nila sagolan ug ethanol, otherwise mapugos na gyud mi himo ug kaugalingon nga fuel delivery system that will improve further our fuel efficiency. For now, gipangkapoy pa gyud mi sige ug panglimpyo sa carburetor.
