normal problem sa pajero be it 4D56 or 4M40 is the turbo. once it sucks dirty air due to loose intake clip, it sucks air and dirt around engine bay resulting in turbo bearing seizure. another thing to look at is its injectors and injection pump - as u said of heavy black smoke.
your 52k mileage pajero could be as a result of reveresed odometer. a 52k mileage pajero wont exhibit that problem. well maintained pajero's are very sweet to own and drive. high torque but once you dont maintain it (or the previous owner) then the cost of bringing it back to glory days may be expensive.
try auto ideas near capitol church. people there are ex mitsubishi workers. so labor is cheaper. look for hermes enriques. he can help you from engine to injectors, injection pump to ECU problem. bast mitsu, they know how to fix it.
