The Les Paul wasn't the first solid-body electric guitar, but it was Gibson who presented the first known electric solid-body guitar contraption aptly called "the log" because it looked like a piece of log for the fireplace.
Gibson didn't make the first electric guitar but they were arguably the most influential developers of the instrument. They had excellent full body acoustic archtops before World War I that they placed pickups on. Later, they developed their famed thin-body archtops that were still theoretically acoustic guitars but has pick-ups. Gibson's closest competitor at that time was Epiphone, which they eventually bought. Epiphones are now the entry level brand of the Gibson Music Co., manufactured in Korea, although they still manufacture some of the Elite series models like the Casino at their Gibson factory in the US.
Owning a brand-new Gibson Les Paul will take you back $3000. A less expensive alternative would be an Epiphone Les Paul entry-level model at $400. The Gibson Les Paul are furnished with the patented vintage humbuckers while you can have the Epi's with double-coil pickups which makes both guitars completely different sounding instruments. Stock Epi's has a tone that's more like an in-between a Les Paul and a Fender Telecaster.
I'm bias towards acoustics. I already have 8 in my collection. But the moment I see a Gibson Les Paul that I can afford, then I'll get it in a jiff.
There is an instructional video on how to make a Les Paul copy as well as a tour of the Gibson factory in You-Tube. Try to search and view it lang. It is very educational.
"The Log"
Paul was dissatisfied with the acoustic guitars that were sold in the mid 1930s and began experimenting with a few designs for an electric model on his own. Famously, he created "The Log," which was nothing more than a length of common 4" x 4" lumber with bridge, guitar neck, and pickup attached. For the sake of appearance, he attached the body of an Epiphone hollow-body guitar, sawn lengthwise with The Log in the middle. This solved his two main problems: feedback, as the acoustic body no longer resonated with the amplified sound, and sustain, as the energy of the strings was not dissipated in generating sound through the guitar body.
